Obafemi Martins breaks Sounders’ single-season record

Obafemi Martins’ rich vein of form continued last weekend, after the Nigerian bagged his 14th and 15th goals of the season, as Seattle Sounders defeated Chivas USA 4-2 in a Major League Soccer match.

The striker, who is still being snubbed by Super Eagles handler Stephen Keshi, also notched his 10th assist, as his team recorded a home win.

Martins scored the equaliser in the 18th minute, after Erick Torres put the visitors in front. The 29-year-old then turned provider for Clint Dempsey, who bagged the second goal in the 45th minute. He completed his brace in the 76th minute, to seal victory.

His latest goals mean he has now broken Eddie Johnson’s 14-goal feat in 2012 and joins Dom Dwyer and Bradley Wright-Phillips, who set new single-season records for Sporting Kansas City and the New York Red Bulls earlier this year.

Sounders sit atop the Western Conference table with 57 points.
