Nwobu emerges Anambra PDP chairman in ‘controversial election’

The leadership tussle currently rocking the Peoples Democratic Party in Anambra may not have abated, even as the party Monday night elected Chief Ndubuisi Nwobu as its new state chairman in what has been described as a ‘controversial congress.’

Nwobu, who is the CEO/MD, Geogold Hotels and Suites, Awka, won the election through option A4 after his closet rival, Chief Okelekwe Kodilichukwu stepped down. Nwobu reportedly polled 1630 votes from the total 1,630 delegates in the congress which was conducted using the option option A4 method. Chukwudi Umeagba, Acting Chairman of Caretaker Committee and Chairman of the Congress in the state had earlier announced the suspension of the exercise over alleged attempt to use fake delegate list for the poll. The congress however proceeded into Monday night, where Nwobu coasted home to victory as the new chairman of the party. Others elected alongside Nwobu were; Okoli Akirika, State Secretary; Clems Ezika, Legal Adviser; Fred Udeisi, Financial Secretary; Ejike Mgbemena, State Treasurer; Tony Offiah, State Publicity Secretary. Others were Solomon Ozua, Assistant State Publicity Secretary; Romanus Anyasie, Assistant Organising Secretary; Sopuru Nwafor, State Vice Chairman (South); C. C. Okeke, State Vice Chairman (Central); Oguejiofor Nwakobi, State Vice Chairman (North); Okeke Asolo, State Deputy Chairman; Edith Nwokedi, State Woman Leader. Also, Chinelo Nwankwo, Ex-Officio; Okonkwo Godwin Obi, State Auditor; Enyinnia Orizu, Assistant Legal Adviser; Eddy Okosi, Youth Leader; Emma Ifeacho, Organising Secretary; Ambrose Dibua, Assistant Secretary; Boni Okoye, Assistant Financial Secretary; Sylvanus Ohaemesi, Ex-Officio 1; Malachi Ezeigweneme, Ex-Officio 2. Meanwhile, Chief Kodilichukwu Okelekwe, a co-PDP State Chairmanship Aspirant has dismissed the process as a sham, saying he was not aware of the conduct of any state congress.

Okelekwe among others protested the use of a fake delegates’ list for the congress, while insisting that no other person, except the Prof Osita Ogbu-led committee sent by the national headquatres had the powers to conduct the congress.

He submitted that Prof Ogbu and his committee members were no where near the venue of the congress, and that since they were the only ones empowered to conduct the election, whatever happened that produced Nwobu was a nullity.

Nwobu on his part during an acceptance speech thanked members of the party for electing him, while extending hands of fellowship to other contestant. He promised to ensure growth in the party in the state.
