The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) on Monday urged President Muhammadu Buhari to honour three of its members killed by Ebola while helping to combat the deadly disease in 2014.

The President of the association, Alhaji AbdulRafiu Adeniji, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

He said the presidential honour would boost the morale of nurses across the country.

He said Ebola had claimed life of a doctor and three nurses among health workers, who rose to combat the disease.

“Unfortunately today, it was only the doctor that the Federal Government recognized.

“The federal government should not be lopsided in remembering people who were hero of the Ebola,’’ he stated, adding that success in the health sector was always due to team work.

Adeniji said the Ebola saga was a big threat from which the country was saved through the sacrifices of the health workers whose families deserved adequate recognition and compensation.

The president also said that in countries like Senegal, health workers who died while trying to save life of Ebola victims had their salaries paid to their families until their year of retirement is attained.

“With this, the loss to the families of the deceased health worker are minimised,’’ he said.

He assured President Buhari of the Association’s support to enable him achieve his government’s set goals in the health sector.

He urged members of the association to remain dedicated and put in their best in alleviating suffering and bringing comfort to the sick persons. (NAN) .
