State branches of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) have been Directed by the union’s president, Comrade Ibrahim Khaleel, to mobilize their members and the general public to occupy state Houses of Assembly until the bill on local government autonomy was passed.

This directive was issued in Gombe on Wednesday in the course of the union’s fifth quadrennial state delegates’ conference.

Khaleel called on civil societies, Non Governmental Organisations, Market Women Associations, Trade Unions and all Nigerians to support the union’s quest for local governments to be granted autonomy, stressing that such autonomy will give room for rapid development and economic growth.

“We believe that the ongoing review of the constitution is the needed panacea to most of Nigerian problems. The National Assembly has heeded the voice of Nigerians by processing the outcome of the public hearing they conducted through voting in support of local government autonomy,” he stated.

While disclosing that the National Assembly’s proposal has restored hope and confidence to the people, the NULGE president maintained that local government autonomy will provide a solid platform for inclusiveness in governance, proper planning and execution of projects and effective service delivery.
