Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South: Youths in protest rally, insist on power shift

Barely two weeks to the general elections, hundreds of youths from Nsukka/Igbo-Eze Federal Constituency, on Wednesday, took major roads in the area by storm, declaring that there would be no going back on their demand for a power shift in the area.

The youths took the stand as they marched around major roads within the constituency, insisting that the present occupier of the office, Rt. Hon. Pat Asadu should give way for Hon. Ikechukwu Ugwuegede.

Asadu is the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for the election, while Ugwuegede is the flagbearer of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

While the former is from Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area, Ugwuegede is from Nsukka Local Government.

DAILY POST reports that the youths are angered over Asadu’s 12-year stay in the Green Chambers, despite what they called rotational zoning arrangement between the two local governments that make up the constituency.

Addressing journalists on the basis for the protest rally, the Coordinator of Better Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South, Hon. Nnaemeka Agbo said it was an avenue for the youths to take a common stand irrespective of party divides.

According to him, “the real owners of power have decided to come together in an agreement that we must get things well.

“As we all can see, gathered here today are thousands of constituents of Nsukka and Igboeze South Federal Constituency irrespective of political parties. To mention a few, they are stakeholders of various political parties from APC, PDP, APGA, ADC, YDP, KOWA as well as representatives of CUPP. Hence forth, we need a fresh air, from whatever source.

“Our decision to come together as brothers and sisters becomes necessary considering the inequalities that have existed within the constituency in the past 12 years with the worst inept representation in the history of legislation.”

Agbo further stated that “we cannot allow ourselves to be ruled for 16 years by one person who has in the actual sense represented us poorly.

“We can’t be foolery for our lifetime, and for that, we’ve come to the reality that no one can rebuild our land except us the people. We’ve over grown beyond division simply because of political parties, we’ve over grown beyond self sabotage as well as self slavery. We’ve grown and have come to a point to decide our future, most especially in the upcoming election through our voter’s card.”

He said having consulted widely among the youths and other stakeholders within the constituency, “ we now unveil to us all, the man that we have jointly come together in acceptance to represent us at the Green Chamber, in the person of Engr Ikechukwu Ugwuegede, who is contesting under APC.

“Engr Ik Ugwuegede as we all know is a man that needs no further introduction. This is because Ik Ugwuegede, popularly known as GEDEGEDE has become a household name in “Nsukka land “. He’s a good man as we already know, a friend of all and the perfect man to represent us at the House of Representatives.

“Finally, let’s remember that the upcoming election is not about the party, it is not about PDP or APC, rather the struggle is about the Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South Federal Constituency. Above all, it’s about our collective aspirations and destinies.

“There is no doubt that Ugwuegede will represent us more effectively as we say bye bye to 12 years of poor representation and no to 16 years ambition. It is time to get independent and do that which is right before God and mankind,” Agbo added.
