Nsukka district owes N1.2bn electricity bills – EEDC

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), on Wednesday, disclosed that consumers in the Nsukka district are owing accumulated electricity bill of N1.2 billion.

Dr Dave Dago, the Assistant General Manager of EEDC in-charge of Revenue Cycle Services, stated this in Nsukka during a customer consultative forum.

He said as the company was striving to improve electricity supply, customers should also discharge their responsibilities by paying their bills promptly.

“The objective of the EEDC is to satisfy customers by ensuring improvement in electricity; customers should also do their own part by paying their bills and protecting electricity installations in their area.

“Customers should promptly pay their bills in banks or at the EEDC cash offices, because the “EEDC will continue disconnection of customers that fail to pay their bill”, he said.

He further stated that the “EDDC will very soon start installing pre-paid metres in Nsukka districts; but customers should avoid metre by-pass; it’s a serious crime that attracts about N50,000 penalty when found guilty by court”.

In a remark, the Assistant General Manager in-charge of operation and maintenance, Mr Tony Ebhodaghe said that the company had developed mechanism that dictates when an area has no light.

“Now, we do not expect our customers to tell us they have no light since we know when a particular area has no light.

“Nsukka district has their source of supply from Oji River and Nkalaga power substations; we have done a lot of maintenance work to ensure effective supply of electricity.

“There has been great improvement in Nsukka district in terms of power supply; when EEDC took over power, consumption in Nsukka was 4000 mg watts in a month, but now it has gone up to 6200″.

Ebhodaghe assured that the company was making frantic effort to replace old transformers with new ones so as to serve EEDC customers better. “Already, we have installed new transformers at Enugu road and Aku road of Nsukka town so as to enhance better power supply”, he said.

Earlier in remark, the MD/CEO of EEDC, Mr Robert Dickerman said that the aim of the forum was to feel heartbeat of customers.

“The policy of the company is anchored on integrity, customer care and performance to achieve quality service to customer.

“There is need for customers to pay their electricity bills to enable the company replace bad transformers, fix faults as well as pay workers of the company.

“EEDC concern is not to make immediate profit but ensure quality services and earn respect from its customers”, he said.

While decrying the habit of some people who used power and refused to pay, Dickerman said, “What EEDC has in South-East as customers is 700,000 whereas the population of south east is about 23 million.

“We are putting measure in pace to use GPRS to capture all electricity users in the zone so as to know those who enjoy our services but refused to pay”.
