The Nigeria Stability and Reconciliation Programme (NSRP) is seeking the support of traditional rulers to curb the rising wave of violence against women and girls in Borno State.
Speaking at a one-day workshop for district heads and women groups in Maiduguri on Wednesday, the regional coordinator of NSRP, Hajjia Hamsatu Allamin said the programme was organized to embark on viable interventions and stop the violence against women.
While giving an overview of the NSRP programme, she noted that from the study of the group, 3000 conflict related death were recorded from 2006 to date, adding that the death does not include thousands of un-reported cases.
According to her, the district heads have a vital role to play in curbing violence against women in the states.
Earlier in her speech, the state coordinator of Health Care and Development Focus Initiative, Agnes Bashir noted that women, girls and youths had continued to suffer hardship due to the precarious effect of insurgency which had remained a nightmare to well meaning Nigerians.
“It is more devastating on women who have over-stretched themselves in order to keep their families together in the face of glaring poverty conditions and untold violence against them and their children”, she added.
According to her, the pathetic situation prompted six civil society organizations in conjunction with NSRP to embark on appropriate and viable projects in order to reduce violence against them.
“This joint advocacy, therefore, is meant to continue to solicit the support and cooperation of high level stakeholders who are vested with the responsibility of safeguarding the life and well being of citizens as Chief Executives of their various organizations in order to develop appropriate policies, support effective intervention initiatives and ensure sustainability of all efforts to reduce violence against women/girls and youths”, the coordinator said.
