NSCDC Plateau trains 272 officers in weapon handling

In its bid to be combat-ready for security operations, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Plateau, says it has trained 272 officers in weapons’ handling, arm drills and combat craft.

State Commandant, Mr Vincent Bature, confirmed this while speaking in Jos on Wednesday at the passing-out ceremony of the command’s fourth batch of the armed squad.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria,NAN, Bature stated that some officers of the command had earlier been trained in weapons’ handling and arms drills at the Command and Staff College, Jaji, adding that “others were equally trained on counter terrorism at the Nigerian Army Depot, Kachia, in Kaduna State.’

He noted that the trained officers would form a formidable armed squad that would work with the military, the police and other security agencies to restore normalcy to the troubled areas on the Plateau.

Bature cautioned the trained officers against acts capable of tarnishing the image of the corps while carrying out their duties.

“Members of the armed squad should never abuse the privilege granted to them. Any corps, who commits any slightest offence in the handling of fire arms would not only be dismissed, but prosecuted immediately,’’ he said.

He stressed that the terms “strange, stray or straight bullets” were not acceptable in the code of ethics, and declared that it was a capital offence for anyone to be involved in the accidental discharge of any fire arm.

The commandant appealed to the Plateau Government to provide the corps with five Hilux patrol vehicles to ease its operations, especially in the troubled areas of Riyom, Barkin-Ladi, Wase and Bokkos Local Government Areas.

He further appealed to the Governor to provide a land or an existing building within the town that would serve as a permanent headquarters for easy and coordinated reach during operations.

Gov. Jonah Jang, who was represented by his Special Adviser on Peace Building, Mr Timothy Parlong, commended the Federal government for arming the NSCDC members.

He said that they were armed to enable them join other security agencies in combating the security challenges facing the nation.

He urged the trained corps to use the knowledge judiciously and shun all forms of rivalry with other security agencies as the goal was the same. NSCDC on the Plateau has so far trained a total of 900 corps. They were trained in extensive weapon handling, arm drills, combat craft, range classification and obstacle crossing since the corps started handling ammunition
