The Cross River State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, has paraded seven suspected cable thieves in Cross River State.
Mr Stephen Lar, NSCDC Commandant in the state, who paraded the suspects on Thursday in Calabar, said that the suspects were arrested on Jan. 4th 2019 in Ogoja local government area of the state.
Lar explained that the arrest followed the steady patrol and surveillance carried out by NSCDC personnel in the state on critical national assets and infrastructure.
According to him, the command under his leadership had recorded tremendous achievement in the area of arrest on suspected oil bunkerers and cable vandals.
“In keeping with the core mandate of the NSCDC which is mainly to curb vandalisation of critical national asset, especially in the oil and other sectors, the Cross River command of NSCDC intercepted vandals who tempered with transformer cables.
“As you can see, they use these cables and burn them into copper irons for their selfish benefits and keeping Nigerians in darkness. Because our eagle eyes are everywhere, we were able to get them arrested in the act.
“The Sabotaging of the country’s economy by same Nigerians have been a recurrent decimal, so we have always been having these issues.
“Even in the oil sector, we have made remarkable achievements by arresting bunkerers. We have quite a number of exhibits in our records,” he stated.
He further said that the 2018 Calabar Carnival was largely successful in terms of power supply, adding that NSCDC personnel kept vigil in all transformers with a view to protect it from vandals.
Lar explained that after a thorough investigation, the suspects will be charged to court for prosecution, adding that the command do not tolerate such issues.
The Commandant warned residents in the state to shun all forms of violence and vandalisation of critical assets, saying that the eagle eyes of the command would not tolerate anyone caught in the act.
One of the suspects, Aminu Kano said that he was wrongly arrested by the NSCDC for the act he did not commit, adding that; “In the name of Allah, I am not a thief. I do iron business in my shop; but I don’t have anything to do with these cables.
“These cables were stolen far away and the suspects absconded. The NSCDC were patrolling around my shop and sighted me working, they now arrested me wrongly. I repeat, I don’t know anything about these cables and how I got to Calabar from Ogoja surprises me,” he lamented.
