NSCDC arrests man for duping IDPs of N27m

Borno State Command of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) have arrested a suspect for duping 9,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to the tune of N27 million for the supply of food items in Maiduguri resettlement camps.

Parading the suspect identified as Bukar Ladan, on Tuesday in Maiduguri, the NSCDC Commandant, Alhaji Abdullahi Ibrahim disclosed that his men made the arrest in Mairi ward of the metropolis, following intelligence reports.

He said that the suspect also confessed to collecting N300 each from the 9, 000 IDPs currently taking refuge in various camps in Maiduguri, the state capital.

His words: “Our men discovered that some of the women IDPs in camps were grumbling and complaining that they had paid their monies for the supply of food items, which were not delivered to them, as pledged to the allegedly defrauded displaced persons.

“It is very unfortunate that some people will go to this length and allegedly defraud these people who had suffered great trauma in the hands of Boko Haram insurgents.”

On how Ladan was arrested, Ibrahim said: “After reaching the suspect’s house, we discovered that he did not have anything worth N10, 000. We don’t know what they are using the money for, but we are still investigating him. The kingpin behind the massive duping is still at large, but we are doing what we can to bringing them all to book.”

The commandant, therefore, warned the IDPs to be vigilant and curious on the perpetration of dubious activities within and outside the resettlement camps in Maiduguri and Biu.

Meanwhile, he said that the command also apprehended a man with fake N1, 000 notes after he had bought goods worth N500, 000 with the fake currency from a shop owner at Circular Road, Maiduguri.

“These dubious elements don’t go to main market where they are easily noticed, they go to large complex market where there are few customers,” said Ibrahim.

He, however, warned: “We therefore, warn shop owners to always be at alert and inform the security agencies of any suspected moves by these elements.”

He said the command had also recorded 10 cases in one month which include murder, defilement, fraud and rape among other criminal activities perpetrated in the metropolis.
