Head coach of Sunshine Stars, Samson Unuanel, has refused to blame goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa for his role in their 1-1 draw with Akwa United.

Friday Ubong fully punished Ezenwa’s mistake, to equalize after Okiki Afolabi gave the hosts the lead, as the Federation Cup holders grabbed an away point in the Nigeria Professional Football (NPFL) Week 1 opener.

“I’m very disappointed but that is just the game, though we lost the game ourselves because we lost a lot of scoring chances,” Unuanel told Goal.

“Throughout the second half, we were in their half but failed to bring down our visitors. Anyway, that is gone and we will correct our mistakes and that time is now.”

“I won’t finger Ezenwa for that goal, I take the blame for that because I fielded him and he is the best we have, he continued.

“Anyone can make mistakes, so he shouldn’t be condemned for that. Mind you, eleven players played and he made crucial saves during the game.

“This is not the time to trade blames on anyone, the game has been played and we will must on from there.

“When I get to the dressing room, I will tell my players to take their chances when it comes, be up and doing, always give a 100% concentration and that is just it.”

Sunshine’s next match will be against Lobi Stars at the Aper Aku Stadium on Wednesday, in a week 2 encounter.
