Ikorodu United’s 1-0 loss to Plateau United on Sunday, means they have been relegated from the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), to the second tier – the Nigeria National League (NNL).
Kelechi John scored the winning goal in the 11th minute, finishing off Bright Silas’ cross. The win made it mathematically impossible for Ikorodu United to stay at the top league with two matches left.
It is an immediate return to the lower league for the Lagos team, who only made their debut in the top flight this season.
Although Ikorodu United fought to stay in the NPFL, picking up wins against Enyimba, Kano Pillars and Heartland recently, it proved to be too little, too late.
They will now join Giwa FC, who were expelled by the League Management Company (LMC), for failing to honour three games cumulatively in one season – a clear breach of Rule B13.28 of the NPFL Rules and Framework.
Two other clubs from Akwa United, Niger Tornadoes, Shooting Stars, Heartland, Abia Warriors, Warri Wolves and MFM FC, are also in danger of getting relegated.
Ikorodu United welcome table toppers Enugu Rangers next weekend.
