Northern Christians rescind decision to pull out of CAN, seek protection from Governors

After several weeks of bickering arising from the election of Dr. Supo Ayokunle as President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, the Northern Zone of CAN has rescinded its decision to pull out of the association and has promised to work with the Ayokunle-led national leadership of CAN.

This was as the association expressed concern over the spate religious intolerance and extremism in the North and resolved that henceforth, state governors would be held responsible for the intimidation, molestation or killing of Christians by religious fanatics under any guise.

It came to this conclusion in a communique issued at the end of its meeting in Jos, which was attended by delegates from all the 19 Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja. The resolution was signed by Northern CAN Chairman, Dr. Yakubu Pam and Public Relations Officer, Joseph Hayab.

While condemning underage marriages and kidnapping in some parts of the North, the organization called on the “unemployed youths in the North to go into farming rather than be waiting endlessly for white collar jobs that are unavailable.”

According to the communique, “It was agreed by all delegates at the meeting that Northern CAN would not pull out of CAN to form a different body. The delegates also resolved that nobody or group outside the Northern CAN Chairman or the PRO of CAN should speak or issue a statement on behalf of Northern CAN henceforth.

“We also resolved that Northern Governors as Chief Security Officers of their respective states should ensure Christians in their states are not intimidated, molested or killed by religious fanatics under any guise.

“The delegates condemn in its totality the recent killings and religious radicalism that was displayed at Zamfara College of Education by some students of Islamic faith. We call on government to ensure Christian students at secondary and higher institutions in the North are given full protection from any form of molestation.”
