Mr Bulus Dabit, the Director of NOA in Plateau, says the number of civil servants is not the burden but the cost of governance which can be reduced through wealth creation.
The NOA director told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jos on Monday that wealth creation could be achieved through entrepreneurial skills development.
He said that many civil servants were in government because of the perception of ‘false social security’ and this mindset had limited their productivity.
‘’People in government limit their productivity by the false security they get from the sector and so are comfortable with routine activities,” he said.
Dabit said that the law should be reviewed to allow civil servants to engage in entrepreneurial ventures provided it would not affect their productivity.
He said most of the technicians in government would leave the service if they had capital to start up their businesses.
The director said entrepreneurial skills should be infused in the civil service and taught at tertiary institutions to enable people discover their passion and work towards achieving them.
‘’The Head of Service should establish an entrepreneurial department in the civil service to prepare workers for retirement and make it mandatory for workers to go through the department,’’ he advised.
‘’Nigeria has a large population necessary for the creation of commercial activities and services which we should key into,” he said.
Dabit, who said that the nation’s human capital could be developed, noted that China and Japan had developed theirs through enhancing the technology skills of its citizens.
