No trigger-happy policeman will go unpunished – Police warns

The Enugu State Police Commissioner, Mr. Danmallam Mohammed has warned policemen against accidental discharge.

Danmallam said that any accidental discharge resulting in the killing of any member of the public by any policeman in the command would attract severe consequences.

The commissioner said this while reacting to the incident along Aninri axis of the Enugu-Port-Harcourt Expressway on Monday where a police patrol team allegedly shot at a lorry with Registration Number DNG 612 XA, reportedly leading to the death of one of the passengers.

Enugu Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ebere Amaraizu stated that Danmallam had directed for a full-scale investigations by the state Criminal Intelligence to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident and that those behind the tragedy had been nabbed.

“The Commissioner regrets the inconveniences caused by the incident which brought about the blocking of roads to other road users by those in sympathy with the victims.

“Henceforth, any accidental discharge resulting in the killing of any member of the public by any policeman in the command would attract severe consequences.

“The policemen are always guided by relevant orders on the use of firearms,” Amaraizu said.
