The Enugu State Police Command Thursday night described as absolute falsehood reported attack of Abi community in Enugu State by Fulani herdsmen.
The report had created tension and anxiety with residents making frantic enquries.
The police said it was shocking that an incident which occurred two years ago could be reproduced in the media.
It made the clarification in a statement by SP Ebere Amaraizu, the Enugu Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO).
He said the news, which appeared on the online version of a newspaper, (not DAILY POST) titled: “Herdsmen Invade Enugu Community, Kill Two, 19 Missing”, which was first published two years ago, precisely on 14thFebruary, 2016.
He described it as “a reoccurring misleading old story” that should be disregarded, accordingly.
“The force is worried over the reoccurrence of the story”, he said, adding: “This is obviously an old story which the command had promptly and diligently handled in 2015”.
SP Amaraizu said that there is no any issue between the herdsmen and their host communities in Enugu State, maintaining that the entire state has remained peaceful and calm.
He therefore, advised members of the public, particularly the people of the state to always disregard the online report in the event of such reoccurrence, disclosing that the command was in contact with the media organization to prevent future occurrence of such “misleading and frightening report”.
