A petrol tanker belonging to Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Tuesday, caught fire while discharging petrol at a filling station along Abdulsalami Abukakar Way, Apo, Abuja.

DAILY POST gathered that the tanker which was loaded with 45,000 litres of petrol, was completely burnt down, while the filling station was partly affected.

Men of the fire service were able to control the fire as the station was not selling fuel when the incident occurred.

Officers from the Federal Fire Service, led by the Operations Commander, Mr. Jaji Abdulganiyu, said the service was committed to putting fire outbreaks under control in the FCT.

“Our officers will always respond promptly whenever they are called upon for emergency situations like this,” the Commander said.

He, however, advised Nigerians that necessary precautionary measures be put in place to prevent both domestic and industry fire disasters.

Confirming the incident to newsmen, Mr. Jeremiah Abimaje, Branch Manager, NNPC Mega Station, said that the cause of the fire was unknown.

“No one can really say what actually caused the fire outbreak.

“The tanker came with the product and was off-loading its product when it suddenly caught fire.

“There was, however, no loss of life,” he added, lauding the prompt arrival of men of the Fire Service which prevented the fire from engulfing the entire filling station and other property in the neighborhood.
