As General Muhammadu Buhari, the winner of the March 28 presidential election prepares to take over as president, the Secretary General of Nigeria Medical Association, NMA, Dr. Adewunmi Alayaki, has counselled him to invest in modern equipment, training of doctors and to ensure constant power supply in order to make Nigeria’s health care delivery one of the best in the world.
Alayaki gave the advice in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital on Friday in an interview with Punch Newspapers.
He said, “We believe the new government will be able to give us a health sector that will attract even foreigners to come here for their health care.
“The president -elect should look into the health of the citizens to give them the best rather than going abroad for treatment.
“He should give us the equipment, the manpower and the energy that will run hospitals in the right direction.
“Nigeria is lagging behind in modern equipment. If you travel out to most of these European and Asian countries, you will see the type of equipment used which we believe the Nigerian government can procure for our hospitals so that the common man can be assisted.”
The NMA scribe bemoaned the situation whereby Nigerian trained doctors go abroad and refused to stay back in the country to attend to health care needs of the people.
Alayaki praised President Goodluck Jonathan for allowing the vote of Nigerians to count, though bemoaning the state of the health sector in the country, which he said has gone down terribly and needing urgent rescue.
He also called on Nigerians to forget the past and support the president-elect as he takes office on May 29.
He said: “We should forget the past because every Nigerian belongs to one party or the other but whenever there is a change of government, let us give that government a chance of its four years.
“I want to appeal to everybody that we should give the government of the day the privilege to perform within the four years and if it fails to perform, that same process that was used to bring them in will be used to send them out.”
