NMA insists on relativity in salary structure for health sector workers

Prof. Adefolarin Malomo, the Chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association( NMA) in Oyo State, on Wednesday urged the Federal Government to maintain relativity in salary structure for health workers.

Malomo told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan on Wednesday that doctors were not opposed to allied health workers getting to the peak of their careers.

“ What we mind is the destruction of relativity because doctors are not just paid for curricular capabilities but also for responsibility in planning and execution of the health care policy of individuals in a comprehensive manner.

“ To deny the fundamental and disproportionate burden of the medical profession in this outlook may be neither true nor good.

“ No matter how much people are paid, as long as there is relativity in the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS), we are happy, ‘’ he said.

NAN reports that the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) of teaching hospitals in the country are demanding appointment into the position of Chief Medical Director and the payment of CONHESS Level 10 for members.

JOHESU also embarked on a warning strike between Jan. 22 and Jan. 24 to press home its demand.

The neurosurgeon also described medical doctors as the flagship of health institutions, adding that they should continue to exhibit leadership as Chief Medical Directors and Chairman, Medical Advisory Council.

Malomo, who said the NMA had continued to exercise courage, love and maturity required of its calling, implored the Federal Government to dialogue with all stakeholders.

He also advised government to promote education about basic remunerations and allocation of authority in all sectors.

The NMA boss said the union had continued to demonstrate understanding by yielding to the health ministry’s appeal and urged other health workers to imbibe the spirit of unity

“ We call upon our co-workers in the health sector to pursue the good of their members vigorously; but not to do so in ways which in the long run will short-change the nation,” he said.(NAN)
