Kogi chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has advised the state government against the planned retrenchment of over 6,000 workers from the state civil service.
This was contained in a communique signed by the state Chairman of the NLC, Mr James Odaudu, and Secretary of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Mr J.O. Kolawole, after a meeting of the organised labour in Lokoja yesterday.
It was stated in the communique that the State Executive Council (SEC) of labour in the state had resolved that rather than embarking on mass retrenchment, government should allow the Implementation Committee of 2014 Ogunmola Screening report to do its job.
The congress also noted that the implementation committee’s job had been taken over by the state Ministry of Finance; Budget and Planning Ministry and the Accountant General’s Office.
In the communique, it is stated that any attempt by the government to retrench the over 6,000 workers and removing their names from pay vouchers as from December will not be accepted.
“SEC in session, having noticed government’s plan to send away over 6,000 workers in Kogi State, hereby resolves that all workers in the state should reject salaries for the month of December, 2014, to protect the job security of our members.”
It, therefore, called on the workers to reject the December salaries if names of their colleagues were omitted, adding that any attempt by government to carry out the exercise would not be condoned.
Labour union in the State reaffirmed its position that failure of the government to do what is expected would affect the peaceful industrial relations in the state.
They also expressed dissatisfaction on installment payment of the last years leave bonus spread over a period of 10 months and wondered when government would start the payment of this year’s annual leave bonus.
