The Nigeria Labour Congress has urged the Federal Government to urgently issue implementation template for the newly approved minimum wage for workers.
Jerry Nnubia, Chairman of the NLC in Anambra, made the call after he was re-elected for a fresh term in office on Thursday in Awka, the state capital.
Nnubia alongside other members of the executive were returned unopposed in the election which was monitored by Chris Ani, National President of the Non-Academic Staff Union on behalf of Ayuba Wabba, the National President of the NLC.
Nnubia said the quick release of the implementation template by the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission (NSIWC) would enable state governors to effect the payment of the new scale without further delay.
He commended the National Assembly and President Muhammadu Buhari for passage and signing of the National Minimum Wage (2019) Repeal Amendment Bill and Governor Willie Obiano for his commitment to paying workers in Anambra the new minimum wage.
He said: “We therefore, wish to use this platform to call on the NSIWC to immediately issue the implementation table/circular to enable our amiable and labour-friendly governor who has already firmly promised to be the first to pay the new minimum wage, implement it for workers in the state.”
Nnubia during the last four years of his leadership of the NLC in Anambra, had mobilised workers successfully for rallies, protests and industrial actions.
He said the protests which were ordered by the national leadership of the union included protests against increase in pump price of petroleum products, against increase in electricity tarrif and estimated billing as well as rallies for increase in minimum wage.
He promised to work with greater commitment and sincerity to protect and defend Anambra workers in the next four years.
He called on Obiano to resolve all labour issues, especially implementing the report of the committee headed by Dr Nkem Okeke, the Deputy Governor.
