NLC takes minimum wage protest to Anambra govt house, tasks Obiano

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Tuesday took the demand for a new minimum wage to Anambra State government house, where it tasked Obiano on compliance.

Chairman of NLC in Anambra State Comrade Jerry Nnubia who led the protesting workers to the state governor, Willie Obiano said that workers are unhappy that it is a new year, and the new minimum wage was still not in sight.

He said, “Your Excellency, workers had thought that they would have celebrated the New Year with the new minimum wage, and that did not happen, and up till now, we are still struggling for it. We urge the government to do the right thing because workers are suffering.”

The coordinator of the protest and representative of the NLC President, Comrade Uche Ekwe who had earlier briefed workers at the freedom square before the commencement of the protest march accused government of insincerity.

He said, “How can governors tell us they do not have money when they keep hiring private jets and incurring huge cost. As far as this minimum wage increase is concerned, we want to let them know that push has come to shove, and we will never back down until the right thing is done.”

Ekwe also read the address of the National president, Ayuba Waba titled; ‘pay us new minimum wage now or never, ‘ and later handed the copy to the Secretary to state government, Prof Solo Chukwulobelu for transmission to the governor.

Speaking on behalf of the governor, Chukwulobelu said Obiano backs NLC on the demand for a new minimum wage.

He said the welfare of workers in the state had been uppermost on the mind of the governor, the reason he released some incentives, including free transport for workers and prompt payment of salaries to boost their morale.

He urged them to vote for candidates of the All Progressives Grand Alliance so that the governor would have members of his party to work with in both the state and at the National Assembly.
