The Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS, Cross River state Command, on Friday said it has arrested two illegal immigrants.
The immigrants, Nji Haeges-Chi from Cameroon and Shahid Mahmood a Pakistani national, were arrested by the border patrol team of the NIS on Thursday at Yala Local Government Area of the state.
The state Comptroller of NIS, Mrs. Funke Adeuyi, made the disclosure to journalists in Calabar while parading the duo at the NIS headquarters in the state capital.
“These two illegal immigrants were arrested by men of the NIS at Yala LGA of the state on March 31.
“After a thorough profiling, our preliminary investigation revealed that both of them do not have the valid travelling documents to be in Nigeria.
“Our investigation also revealed that the Pakistani national was smuggled into Nigeria by his Cameroonian accomplice and as it concerns security, the intention of the Pakistani and his Cameroonian accomplice is threatening and we must further check them accordingly,’’ the Comptroller said, adding that no incriminating evidences were found on both of them.
The Comptroller said that they would still subject them to further security checks.
“We will do a thorough search to ensure they are not in any wanted list of any country, we must still subject them to further security investigation to ensure that they are not wanted somewhere before sending them back to their countries.”
Adeuyi warned transport operators in the state to stop aiding human traffickers in smuggling illegal immigrants into the state, noting that the NIS in the state would continue to carry out its constitutional duties to ensure that foreigners entering into the state are certified accordingly.
“The NIS and the police have a maritime unit that patrols all the maritime corridors of the state,” the Comptroller added.
