NIS arrests officer for collecting large amount from applicants, C-G vows not to spare him

The Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS, has kick-started the process for reconsidering the dispersed 2000 officers and men who were unilaterally and illegally recruited into the service in 2015, adding that it has so far dispensed with the superintendent cadre.

A statement issued yesterday by the Service PRO, E.S King DCI, reports that the Comptroller-General of Immigrations, CGI, Mohammed Babandede MFR, stated that the process commenced on Monday, as he warned officers and men of the service to desist from all fraudulent activities while the process lasts.

Babandede disclosed that an officer, whose name was not given, has been arrested for collecting large sum of money from some of the applicants and promised that he would not spare the officer.

He, therefore, warned personnel of the Service against collecting money from applicants promising to assist them in the screening process or even promising job offers they knew was not feasible, asserting that any personnel caught in the act would be shown the way out.

The CGI further announced, in the statement, that the NIS contact centre would be launched in two weeks’ time for test-run by officers and men and would be open to the general public subsequently.

He charged officers and men to desist from all forms of corruption because the contact centre would expose them.

He also announced that twenty-eight new CERPAC centres would be launched next month across the federation, which would bring NIS services closer to the public in line with global best practice, adding that the development would make it mandatory for all expatriates to appear in the CERPAC centres for biometric capturing before they would be issued with CERPAC cards.

Babandede, in the statement, disclosed that the NIS will actively participate in paramilitary games slated for October, and threatened to punish any personnel that refuses to participate in the sporting activities.

The statement reads in part, “The CGI stated that the Service would soon launch “operation own your laptop” which will avail all officers and men the opportunity to own a laptop at a subsidized rate and lenient payment plan. He however cautioned all personnel never to sell it after collection for subsequent promotion interviews would be computer based.

“The CGI stated in clear terms that officers who have formed social media forum to discuss official matters and even degenerate to using it to abuse senior officers and even posting classified information to the social media should close up such fora.

“The practice is hereby abolished and henceforth any personnel caught contributing to such fora would be sanctioned,” the statement quotes Babandede as saying.

King continued, “While responding to some of the issues raised by officers, the CGI said that he would do everything within his powers to follow it up with the Board so that the result would be out before the next parade.

“The CGI said that work would start soonest for a befitting auditorium for the Service as some money was approved for it in the year’s budget.

“The CGI stated that the standard uniform ethic as being observed by the CGI and his S.As would be adopted for all officers and men, immediately uniform materials are made available.”
