Night life fades away in Calabar over cult related clashes

Night life is gradually fading away in Calabar, Cross River State, following renewed cult clashes.

The cult activity, which started since Monday has crippled night life in the metropolis. The death toll of the cult activity has risen to over ten.

Sadly, in the renewed clash, two persons were killed on Friday in Calabar South. One of them, identified as Effanga was shot dead along Egerton Street, the exact spot where one of his colleagues was killed on Thursday.

Late Effanga, whose parents reside along Magnus Henshaw, was killed on his way to their family house along Egerton.

Relations described the brutal murder as painful and tragic lamenting that his uncle was buried on Thursday.

The same Thursday, five suspected cultists were killed, while three persons were killed along Bayside axis on Monday and another two around Palm Street.

It was gathered that the Vikings were marking the death anniversary of one of their late members when shooting broke out and the second in command of the Mafians was killed.

The killings, which is between the Vikings and the Mafians is a retaliation of a clash between the two groups last year that led to the demise of the Vikings member whose remembrance was marked.

Sources claimed that the Vikings killed three members of their rival Mafians who replied with the killing of two Vikking members.

As at the time of filing this report, the Vikings are reported to have killed four members of their rival Mafians.

Though unconfirmed sources claimed that seven cultists have been killed but the police in Calabar said that only three persons have died as a result of the clash.

The Police spokesperson for the Cross River State Police Command, Irene Ugbo, said that the Police had restored calm, law and order in the area.

Ugho disclosed that some persons had been arrested in connection with the killings.

She told DAILY POST that the Police had started investigation into the killings as well as intensified patrol in the affected areas.

Ugbo charged residents of Calabar to go about their lawful businesses as the police were on top of the situation.

Disappointingly, night life have seriously been affected as the residents now go to their houses as early as 6pm.

Calabar is noted for her rich delicacies, relaxation centres, restaurants and sit-outs‎.
