Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to this Thursday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian newspapers:

1. Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Dino Melaye, Wednesday raised the alarm on the floor of the Senate that the Federal Ministry of Works, Power and Housing and Bureau of Public Procurement have been involved in contract scandal running into billions of naira. Raising a point of order (42) of Senate Rules, Malaye alleged contract infraction by the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing, explaining that Nigerians had opened a ledger for thieves in power.

2. The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences (ICPC) on Wednesday handed over 40 vehicles it recovered from retired directors and assistant directors of the Federal Ministry of Water Resources. According to the Chairman of ICPC, Barrister Ekpo Nta, the vehicles were recovered by a crack team led by the commission’s Director of Asset Tracing, Mr. Frank Nanakumo. The recovered vehicles are Hilux pickup (13); 1 Hilux pickup; 2 Toyota RAV4; 1 Audi Q7; 1 Ford Explorer; 1 Land Rover; 1 Nissan Patrol; 8 Toyota Prado; 3 Toyota Avensis; 7 Toyota Corolla; 1 Toyota Camry and 1 Audi A6.

3. The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, has disclosed that one of the reason for power cut across the country was lack of finance to pay for the supply of gas to power stations. Fashola who made the disclosure while addressing State House Correspondents, shortly after the Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting said effort was on top gear to settle those being owed.

4. The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission on Wednesday told the Senate Committee on Privatization that without an increase in electricity tariff or an intervention by way of subsidy from the Federal Government to power firms, the country would not be able to get the desired steady power supply. Senate Committee on Privatisation, who were at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja on an oversight visit, however, rejected their position and proposed that more investors be allowed in the sector.

5. MMM investor will continue to regret after report says the Lead Guider for MMM Nigeria, Chuddy Ugorji, has left the country with his wife, Amaka. Report says they have left for the Philippines. This is coming at a time the scheme is finding it difficult to pay investors.

6. Senior officials and members of the newly formed mega political party, the Action Democratic Party (ADP) on Tuesday submitted all required documents to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to register it as one of the major political parties ahead of the 2019 elections. Protem National Chairman, Engr. Yagbayi Sani and other interim officers, led ADP supporters to INEC’s office in a long motorcade amid singing and dancing.

7. Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has denied speculations claiming he contracted some Governors, to compel acting President, Yemi Osinbajo to resign so he could take over as President once Osinbajo resigns. In a statement released on Wednesday, Saraki said such reports were baseless, empty and unintelligent.

8. The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has advised the Federal Government to bring Nigeria out of the current recession by reviewing urgently the country’s monetary policies. Tinubu spoke on Wednesday as a guest lecturer at the National Defence College Course 25 lecture, titled, “Strategic Leadership: My Political Experiences.” He said the current inflation rate of 18 per cent was unbearable and Nigerians were in pain.

9. Adamawa State Judicial Service Commission has announced the removal of two judges from office. One other judge was demoted. The removed magistrates are Abdurrazak Abdullahi and Yohanna Kake, while Hussaini Musa was demoted.

10. Following the foiled suicide bomb attacks by the Military in Maiduguri on Tuesday and in the early hours of Wednesday, the Borno State Police Command, yesterday, confirmed the killing of four persons in the multiple attacks.
