Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Wednesday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. Robert Mugabe has resigned as the president of Zimbabwe. His resignation letter was read by the Speaker of the parliament on Tuesday. In the letter, Mugabe wrote, “I Robert Gabriel Mugabe in terms of section 96 of the constitution of Zimbabwe hereby formally tender my resignation… with immediate effect.’’ Following the development, it has been celebration galore in the country

2. President Muhammadu Buhari, Tuesday met with his counterpart from Togo, Faure Gnassingbé behind closed-doors at the Presidential Villa, Abuja and discussed matters affecting some countries including Liberia, Togo and Guinea.

3. Some Dss officials and some operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission clashed for over 13 hours on Tuesday when the anti-graft agency stormed the home of the immediate past Director General of the DSS, Ekpenyong Ita, to arrest him. Officials of the DSS at the gate refused to let the operatives into the house, even as the EFCC operatives insisted on effecting the arrest not minding the position of the DSS. This led to threat of gun attack.

4. Nigerian reggae artist, Burna boy has denied involvement in the robbery attack on Mr 2kay at Eko Hotel and Suites. This was disclosed in a statement released by his record label after the police. The statement further claimed that contrary to reports, the artists was never declared wanted by the police, and that he had honoured the only invitation extended to him for questioning. But Mr 2Kay has insisted Burna Boy had threatened him earlier.

5. No fewer than 50 persons in Mubi, Adamawa State on Tuesday after a teenage suicide bomber attacked a mosque in Kunu Araha area in the morning. According to the state police command, the suicide bomber was a 17-year-old boy who detonated his explosive device shortly after the worshippers ended the subh (dawn) prayer.

6. The Senate on Tuesday announced the deferment of debate on the 2018 budget submitted to the joint session of the National Assembly by President Muhammadu Buhari about 2 weeks ago. This is contrary to its earlier plan to commence debate on the general principles of the budget. Saraki told the lawmakers that the deferment was to enable the Upper Legislative Chamber pass the Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and the Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP), this week.

7. A reporter with the African Independent Television, AIT, Mr Abdullahi Ibrahim, his wife and three children got perished in an accident in Kogi State. Abdullahi, a senior journalist was said to be going to his hometown, Okaba, in Ankpa local government area of Kogi State on Thursday in preparation for his daughter’s wedding coming up this December when the accident occurred between Ojodu and Ochadamu communities along Ajaokuta- Ayingba highway.

8. Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), has denied buying any house from wanted former chairman of the Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT), Abdulrasheed Maina. Falana said on Tuesday in Lagos, that there was no truth in the claims. He challenged Maina to produce the details of the house that he purportedly bought from him.

9. The troops of the Nigerian Army have arrested seven suspected kidnappers in Omoku, Rivers State, after storming a shrine in the area. Report says the suspects were arrested by the 6 Division of the army on Monday after a tip-off that a kidnappers’ shrine was being operated by one Johnson, aka Don Waney. Seven suspects, including two ladies were arrested while the gang leader reportedly evaded arrest.

10. A former governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu has advised the incumbent Governor, Okozie Ikpeazu to join the All Progressives Congress, APC, adding that he will be given automatic ticket to run for the 2019 election. Kalu said the APC was working hard to win the governorship seat of Abia State in 2019.
