1. The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has expressed grave concern over insecurity challenges that have continued to confront the nation in the recent time. The group said the nation’s security system has become dysfunctional, saying the inability of the various security arms to wrestle those threatening the existence of Christians and other innocent citizens in Nigeria has exposed a terrible failure of the nation’s security.
2. The Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, has said that senate’s non-confirmation of his appointment won’t discourage him from carrying out his responsibilities. He made the statement after he visited the Lagos State Chief Judge, Mrs Opeyemi Oke, saying that with or without confirmation, work must continue.
3. The Nigeria Senate upon resumption of plenary after the New Year break discussed the insecurity in the nation. The Senate President in his opening speech addressed the nation’s insecurity, fuel scarcity and others, assuring that issues plaguing the nation would be tackled urgently.
4. Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Yakubu Dogara has lamented recurring fuel scarcity in Nigeria. He said this Tuesday during his opening remarks at the resumption of the House of Representatives from its Christmas break. Speaking on the alleged reintroduction of fuel subsidy and scarcity of the product, the Speaker charged the relevant committees of the House to unravel the causes and claims.
5. Police Command in Kano State, on Monday, quizzed Governor Abdullahi Ganduje’s Commissioner for Special Duties, Alhaji Abdullahi Abbas Sunusi. His invitation followed Sunday’s bloody clash between members of the Kwankwasiyya (supporters of former Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso) and Gandujiyya (Ganduje’s supporters). Police spokesman, DSP Magaji Majia, told newsmen in Kano that the commissioner was asked to appear after a petition submitted by a private lawyer where it was alleged that he ordered supporters to attack Kwankwaso.
6. Five people, including two insurgents, were killed on Tuesday in Pallam village of Madagali in Adamawa, following Boko Haram attack. Report says the insurgents attacked the village around midnight in an operation that lasted over one hour, killing three people. Soldiers and local security, however, killed two of the insurgents.
7. Report says property allegedly belonging to former First lady, Patience Jonathan, was on Tuesday demolished by the Federal Capital Development Control Department. The affecting building is situated on Shehu Yar’Adua Way along Mabushi–Kado–Life Camp Expressway, Abuja. Report says the case on the building is still pending before the Federal High Courts in Lagos and Abuja.
8. Report says a suspected bomb factory has been uncovered in Iddo, Okpella, in Estako East local government area of Edo State. This followed an explosion in the area. One of the suspected bomb makers was killed in the explosion while another person’s leg was also chopped off by the blast, the Nation reports.
9. Bisi Akande, a former Interim National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has said Nigeria is practicing a “military democracy” under the President Muhammadu Buhari’s government. The former APC National Chairman said there was no way Nigeria would succeed if the country continues with such practice.
10. Suspected Fulani armed men on Monday attacked Karmen community, Taraba State, killing a local traditional ruler. The chairman of Ibi local government council, Hon. Bala Bako, confirmed the attack to newsmen in Jalingo. Bako said the Fulani gunmen struck during a security meeting in the community.
