Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Wednesday morning

1. Armed men suspected to be Fulani herdsmen, yesterday attacked and killed an official of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC at Tse Torkula, Benue State.

The deceased was working on the petroleum pipeline with his colleagues in the area.

2. Coalition for Nigeria, a political movement promoted by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, will be launched in Abuja on Wednesday January 31.

The movement is currently being coordinated by a former Governor of Osun State, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, a longstanding associate of the former Nigerian leader.

3. The Federal High Court, Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State has ruled that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC lacked power to investigate finances of the State.

According to the court, “in federalism, the Federal Government is not an overseer or supervisor regarding finances of a State.”

4. A former Senate President, Ameh Ebute, has written former President Dr. Olusegun Obasanjo in disagreement to his assessment of President Muhammadu Buhari’s government.

He said he had cautioned the former President when he (Obasanjo) wrote a similar letter to former President Jonathan that it was not in the interest of the unity and peace of the nation to do so.

5. No fewer than three persons have been confirmed dead, while several others are under watch in Jalingo, Taraba State capital, following the outbreak of Lassa Fever in the state, World Health Organisation, WHO, has said.

Represented by Dr. Zeto Philip, the Surveillance Officer said 12 cases have been reported, three confirmed dead, while three positive cases have been placed under close monitoring.

6. The Federal High Court in Abuja, Tuesday, trashed a fundamental human rights enforcement suit filed by wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission of violating her various rights.

Delivering judgment on Tuesday, Justice John Tsoho, ruled that none of her complaints against the EFCC was sustainable.

7. The Independent National Electoral Commission says apart from giving physical copies of results of the 2019 elections to party agents, it will also be announcing the results electronically.

The Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said the same mechanism would be used in the Ekiti and Osun governorship elections in July and September, respectively.

8. Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, on Tuesday insisted that suspension of Mr Munir Gwarzo, Director-General of Security and Exchange Commission (SEC), was valid.

9. The Senate of the federal republic of Nigeria has expressed great concerns over the widespread usage of Bit-coin, a form of Crypto-currency and other ponzi schemes across the country.

This was consequent upon a motion moved by Senator Benjamin Uwaiumogu (Imo North), who expressed concern that Nigerians were freely advised, and even persuaded to invest in crypto-currency as it promised quick returns, in certain instances, a triple or quadruple of the invested sum as profit within days.

10. Arsenal yesterday lost 3-1 lost to Swansea City in the Premier League.

The Gunners took the lead just past the half-hour mark courtesy of Nacho Monreal but fell apart as Swansea scored three times.

Sam Clucas scored the equalizer within 2 minutes before Jordan Ayew gave them the lead in the second-half and Clucas added a third, four minutes from time.
