Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Wednesday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. A federal capital territory (FCT) high court on Tuesday sentenced Joshua Dariye, a former governor of Plateau State to 14 years in prison.

The court found Dariye guilty of misappropriating N1.16 billion Ecological Fund meant for the state.

2. Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Boss Mustapha, on Tuesday disclosed that President Muhammadu Buhari has given approval for some other Nigerians to be conferred with national honours for their contributions to democracy.

Mustapha spoke at the Presidential Villa, Abuja venue of the posthumous investiture of Chief Moshood Abiola as Grand Commander of the Federal Republic; his running mate, Babagana Kingibe as Grand Commander of the Order of Niger and late human rights activist, Gani Fawehinmi, also as GCON.

3. A national leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and a former interim National Chairman of the party, Chief Bisi Akande have endorsed the candidacy of former Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole for the national chairman of the party.

Tinubu, Akande and governors elected on the platform of the party made their position known when they paid Oshiomhole a courtesy visit at his campaign office on Tuesday.

4. President Muhammadu has approved the renewal of the tenure of Boboye Olayemi Oyeyemi as the Corps Marshal/Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps FRSC, as well as the tenure of five other Chief Executive Officers of Federal Agencies.

The President has similarly approved the appointment of two new Chief Executive Officers of Federal Agencies and one Senior Special Assistant.

5. President Muhammadu Buhari last night met with the governors on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the state house in Abuja.

Present at the meeting is the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo and governors of Adamawa, Edo, Imo, Kwara, Kebbi and Kano states, Katsina, Benue, Ogun, Jigawa, Kogi and Kaduna states.

6. A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has granted former Minister of Finance, Nenadi Usman, leave to serve the Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, notice to appear before the court and explain why he should not be committed to prison for publishing the name of the applicant in looters’ list, while the matter is pending in court.

The Federal Government, through the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, is prosecuting Usman and three others before the court and they pleaded not guilty.

7. The supremacy battle between two cult groups— Vikings Confraternity and Black Axe— has claimed the lives of three persons in Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

According to report, one was killed at Liverpool Road, another in Uqua Village, while the third person was killed at a sit-out at Atai Ndon Village, all in Eket.

8. Troops of the Nigerian Army have killed no fewer than 23 Boko Haram terrorists during a clearance operation in the Lake Chad region of Borno State.

According to the army, during the clearance operation in Bulakeisa, Tumbuma Babba, Abbaganaram and Dan Baure villages in the Lake Chad region, other terrorists who were injured fled the areas.

9. Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State said yesterday that the state has lost over N400 billion worth of property to renewed militant herdsmen attacks on communities in the state since 2015.

According to Ortom, the estimate was arrived at following preliminary report of assessment of damage caused by the crisis, stressing that the loss was much and difficult to recover from.

10. Real Madrid have announced that Julen Lopetegui will take over as manager after the 2018 World Cup.

Lopetegui is currently with the Spain’s national team preparing for the tournament.
