Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Wednesday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. The Police Command in Enugu State, on Tuesday, sealed the Enugu office of the All Progressives Congress (APC) over leadership tussle between the two factions of the party. Report says a police squad led by the Commissioner, Mohammed Danmallam cordoned the office located on Nike Avenue, GRA, Enugu. A factional group led by Mr. Okey Ogbodo was holding a meeting in the office when another faction led by Dr. Ben Nwoye attempted to scuttle the meeting.

2. The All Progressives Congress (APC) has reacted to a recent claim by the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) that the Muhammadu Buhari government was planning a forceful change of leadership at the National Assembly. Reacting, APC national publicity secretary, Yekini Nabena, insisted that the National Assembly must be allowed to reconvene to pave way for the majority to take over. The statement referred to Saraki, Dogara and other APC Senators as outgoing lawmakers.

3. Former Governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu, on Tuesday said the leader of the Independent People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, is in London. He claimed that Kanu fled to the United Kingdom during the time the military was looking for him. Kalu disclosed this in an interview with newsmen after meeting with former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi, IBB, in Minna.

4. Relatively, following his visit to Babangida in Minna, the Niger State capital, Orji Uzor Kalu, a former governor, has disclosed that he tried to convince the former president to support Buhari ahead of the 2019 elections. He, however, said IBB’s response was that he was contemplating on whether to support Buhari or not.

5. Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State has once again written the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), affirming his readiness to make himself available at the commission’s Abuja office after October 16, 2018 at 1pm, but was quick to say that if the EFCC, out of its alleged ‘partiality’, would want to meet him before then, he was ready to receive them at his office on September 20.

6. The joint Senate and House of Representatives committee working on the Electoral Act 2010 Amendment Bill, has passed the bill for the fourth time. The joint Senate and House of Representatives Committee on the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, while briefing journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, denied removing the Electronic Card Reader, with which voters are accredited during elections, from the bill. The committee explained that it had only harmonised versions of the legislation and passed them as a fourth bill.

7. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticised the All Progressives Congress (APC) over its rally conducted in Osogbo, the Osun state capital on Tuesday.

PDP in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, described speeches by APC leaders and President Muhammadu Buhari as a failure. Ologbondiyan said the speeches showed the fact that the ruling party has lost its bearings and cannot save the nation’s economy.

8. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said it was not banning the use of Smartphone around the polling unit areas, but the moment a prospective voter entered voting cubicle to cast his or her vote. The Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Mr Rotimi Oyekanmi, made the declaration on Tuesday in Abuja, while reacting to the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Uche Secondus, who condemned the decision of INEC to ban the use of smartphones at polling booths.

9. At least, three people have been reported killed and beheaded in a fresh cult violence at Ubimini community in Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State. The victims have been identified as Eddy Dogwo, also known as Bakasi, Odugbo Didia and a third victim whose nickname was given as ‘Things Change’. Report says the young men were killed by members of a rival cult gang that invaded the community in the early hours of Tuesday.

10. A Director and two staff of Shehu Idris College of Health Sciences and Technology, Makarfi, have been reportedly kidnapped along Zaria – Makarfi Expressway, on Monday. The kidnapped staff were Mr. Elisha Damina Akau, Director School of Dental Science, Rabi’at Malami Dogo and Halima Rilwan. Report says the kidnapped staff were returning from Teejay Palace Hotel in GRA, Zaria where they had attended their Board examination when they were intercepted by the gunmen who whisked them away to an unknown destination.
