Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Wednesday morning

1. Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom has urged his supporters to ensure peaceful campaigns for the 2019 elections in the state.

Governor Ortom stated that as those who currently possess the people’s mandate, they should handle it with care and not allow political opponents distract them.

2. The Nigerian Elections Debate Group (NEDG) and the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON) have released the names of political parties that will be participating in the 2019 vice presidential and presidential debates.

According to a statement signed by the Executive Secretary of the NEDG, Mr Eddi Emesiri, the parties are Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN), Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN), All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Young Progressives Party (YPP).

3. President Muhammadu Buhari, at exactly 4:26pm on Tuesday, signed the National Peace Accord Agreement for a peaceful conduct of the 2019 elections, assuring that they will uphold the highest standard of conduct.

President Buhari was accompanied by the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrad Adams Oshiomhole, to sign the document.

4. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has given reasons its candidate and Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, was absent at the signing of the peace accord by presidential candidates in the 2019 general elections.

PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, said in a statement on Tuesday, that the party was not represented at the event due to communication lapse between the National Peace Committee (NPC) and its national secretariat.

5. Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has claimed that Nigeria is now the food basket of the world.

Speaking at the Nigerian-German Investment Dialogue in Berlin, Germany, Osinbajo said Nigeria is a leading investment destination for potential and serious investors.

6. National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, has denied accusing wife the President, Mrs. Aisha Buhari of having amorous relationship with a PDP senator.

The APC chairman said the report on social media where he reportedly accused Aisha of sleeping with a certain senator of the opposition party was false.

7. President Muhammadu Buhari says Nigerian government remains deeply grateful to the government and people of Switzerland for their support in resuscitating the economy, especially the return of stolen funds.

The president expressed the nation’s gratitude when he received Letters of Credence from the Ambassador of Switzerland to Nigeria, Mr George Steiner, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Tuesday.

8. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced plans to place names of governors in the states where workers are being owed salaries and pensions for several months on a “watch list”.

Mr Ayuba Wabba, President of the NLC, made this known while addressing the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) at its 17th anniversary on Tuesday Abuja.

9. Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Kukah, has said contrary to popular opinion that the north is not interested in restructuring, elites in the region know there’s a lot to benefit from it.

Bishop Kukah also said the region currently had the highest level of poverty in the country.

10. The Nigerian Army on Tuesday faulted the report that the International Criminal Court, ICC, has found it guilty of war crime.

In a statement by the Director Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Sani Usman Kukasheka, the army said, the publication was false and fabrication of the writer’s imagination.
