1. Report has it that the Imo state governor, Rochas Okorocha and six other chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state have been summoned to appear before a disciplinary committee set up by the state chapter of the party over alleged anti-party activities. The six other APC bigwigs are the party’s candidate for Imo East senatorial district, Mr. Emma Ojinere; House of Representatives candidate for Ezinihitte Mbaise/Ahiazu Mbaise Federal Constituency, Mr. Rapheal Igbokwe; Ehime Mbano/IhitteUboma/Obowo Federal Constituency candidate, Mr. Chike Okafor; state Deputy Speaker, Mr. Ugonna Ozuruigbo; Mr. Eddy Iheanacho and a gubernatorial aspirant, Mr. Obinna Mbata.
2. President Muhammadu Buhari, Tuesday officially named Mohammed Adamu as acting Inspector-General of Police, IGP. Buhari decorated him with the new rank during his meeting with the outgoing Inspector General of Police, IGP Ibrahim Idris and Adamu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
3. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has said it will file a libel suit against Femi Fani-Kayode, Yinka Odumakin “and other purveyors of the evil news”, over claims that the agency raided the house of Walter Onnoghen, the Chief Justice of Nigeria. The agency was reacting to rumours on social media on Tuesday that Onnoghen had been arrested.
4. President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, who are also the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forthcoming Presidential elections, will on Wednesday, January 16, 2019, at 8pm (Nigerian time) participate in a live televised two-hour presidential town-hall programme. This was contained in a statement by Festus Keyamo, the Director, Strategic Communications, APC Presidential Campaign Council.
5. The Kwara State government has banned street rallies and campaigns across the state following the recent attacks that led to sporadic shootings of innocent citizens and the destruction of property. In a broadcast to the people of the state on Tuesday, Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed explained that the decision was necessary to ensure that the state is not plunged into chaos. He added that only political rallies in designated places will be allowed.
6. The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has accused President Muhammadu Buhari and his son-in-law, Mr. Junaid Abdullahi of allegedly engaging in corruption, economic sabotage and unethical conduct by using funds from fake contract awards to fund the president’s re-election campaign to the tune of about N18bn. This was contained in a statement on Tuesday by Atiku’s Special Assistant on Public Communication, Mr. Phrank Shaibu.
7. The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen has denied reports that his residence in Abuja was raided by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The Senior Special Adviser to the CJN on media, Mr. Awassam Bassey, described the report as false news.
8. The Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar on Tuesday declared that Nigeria is still in recession despite the claim of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC. Atiku made this known while speaking at the presidential rally held in Osogbo, the Osun State capital. He said going by the recent economic reports, “Nigeria remains the headquarters of poverty in the world”.
9. The Federal Executive Council, FEC, has resolved to take the N30,000 new national minimum wage request to the National Economic Council, NEC. FEC reached the resolution at its emergency meeting held on Tuesday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The minimum wage request will be tabled at the NEC meeting scheduled for Thursday at the State House, Abuja. The request will also be presented to the National Council of State fixed for January 22, according to the Nation.
10. Kenya, on Tuesday, was put under attack after some suspected militants attacked a luxury hotel complex in Nairobi, killing at least eleven people. Report says the attack began at about 15:00 local time (12:00 GMT) as heavy gunfire and an explosion sent people running for their lives Tuesday afternoon at the compound in the Westlands district of the Kenyan capital, which houses the DusitD2 hotel as well as offices.
