Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Wednesday morning

1. The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has declared the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, President Muhammadu Buhari as the winner of Nigeria’s 2019 presidential election. INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu made the declaration on Wednesday morning at the ICC Collation centre in Abuja. President Buhari polled a total of 15,191,847 votes, compared to the 11,262,978 votes polled by Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

2. The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Tuesday, before the final announcement of the presidential result had demanded the stoppage of collation of results for the presidential and National Assembly elections across the country. It said INEC should stop the exercise following the alleged reconfiguration of data contained on the card reader. The Deputy Director General of the PDP Campaign Organization, Alhaji Tanimu Turaki said this while briefing newsmen in Abuja.

3. George Akume, a former Governor of Benue State, has lost his bid to return to the Senate. Akume lost the seat to Orker Jev of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the senatorial election in Benue Zone B. Announcing the result on Wednesday, the Returning Officer for the election, Prof Nicodemus Ochani, said Akume of the APC polled 115,422 while Jev of PDP got 157,726 votes to win the contest. With this, PDP has won all the three senatorial districts in Benue State.

4. Former Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio has lost his bid for re-election into the Senate. This was announced on Tuesday afternoon by the Returning Officer, Prof Peter Ogban, at INEC office in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. Akpabio lost to Chris Ekpenyong of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He polled 83,158 while Chris polled 118,215 votes.

5. A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Buba Galadima who was arrested on Sunday by hooded security men has released a letter to his family regarding his safety. On Wednesday morning, the family of Galadinma said they received a letter purportedly written by him from an undisclosed location assuring that he is safe.

6. No fewer than 13 persons have been detained by the Nigerian Army over alleged illegal possession of ballot papers and bribe-taking during Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly elections. Among those arrested were Rivers Commissioner for Urban Development, Dr. Reason Williams and Mr. Opokri Wanaka, a serving member in the Rivers State House of Assembly. Others include an army major and three police officers accused of collecting bribes to compromise election materials kept inside the premises of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

7. The National leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) said the Congress will on Friday stage a peaceful protest in Ogun State tagged “Operation Occupy Ogun State.” The protest, to be led by the National President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, is to enforce all pending labour issues between the Organised Labour and the Ogun State Government.

8. The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bolaji Ahmed Tinubu has called on the opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to accept the result of the presidential election, adding that it was free and fair. Tinubu spoke at the Campaign Centre of the APC, in Abuja after President Buhari gave his address to party members and Nigerians.

9. President Muhammadu Buhari has told APC supporters and chieftains not to mock the opposition for the party’s victory in the just concluded presidential election but to be magnanimous in victory. He also promised a better Nigeria in the next four years, saying he would focus on security, restructuring of the economy and fighting of corruption He made this statement at the APC campaign office in Abuja.

10, The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Tuesday cancelled a total of 146,555 votes from Plateau in the Saturday Presidential election over failure to adhere to electoral guidelines. Prof. Richard Anande, the state’s Collation Officer, made the disclosure while giving a breakdown of election results from the state’s 17 local governments, at the INEC National Collation Centre in Abuja.
