Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Wednesday morning

1. The Federal Government has dragged the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick, and four others to court for allegedly misappropriating $8,400 belonging to the football body. The four other suspects are NFF Secretary, Sunusi Mohammed; the 1st Vice-President, Seyi Akinwumi; the 2nd Vice-President, Shehu Dikko and an Executive member, Yusuff Fresh.

2. Liverpool have qualified for the Champions League final, following an incredible 4-0 win over Barcelona on Tuesday night. An early goal from Divock Origi inspired Jurgen Klopp’s team into cancelling the 3 goals deficit and scoring the fourth to send Barca out. Liverpool will now face Ajax or Tottenham for the trophy.

3. The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal is set to begin hearing of petition by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Atiku Abubakar against the election of President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The tribunal will hold its inaugural session on Wednesday at the Abuja division of the Court of Appeal. Schedule of activities were released on Tuesday with four petitions for mention.

4. The Senate, on Tuesday, pledged to give adequate budgetary support required by the Nigeria Police to enable them to tackle the increasing security challenges nationwide. Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, disclosed this on the floor of the house shortly after a closed-door session that lasted more than two hours with the acting Inspector General (I-G) of Police, Mohammed Adamu, in Abuja.

5. Zamfara State on Tuesday recorded another terror attack as armed bandits killed over 35 persons in Shinkafi Local Government Area of the state. An eyewitness who gave her name as Rukiya Ibrahim said what she saw was unbelievable as she had never seen such inhumane act in her entire life. The police is yet to confirm this fresh attack.

6. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Enugu Zonal Office, Tuesday arraigned a former acting branch manager of Sterling Bank Plc, Oliver Anidiobi, over alleged N187 million fraud. The former bank chief was made to appear before Justice C.O. Ajah of the state’s High Court sitting in Enugu. It was also gathered that Anidiobi, is facing a 32-count charge bordering on forgery and stealing from the microfinance bank. EFCC spokesman, Tony Orilade, said this in a statement in Abuja.

7. The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on Tuesday gave Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State, 24 hours ultimatum to revise the school fees of four state higher institutions to the initial amount. The four higher institutions are Adekunle Ajasi University, Akungba (AAUA), Ondo State University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa (OSUSTECH); Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo and Ondo State School of Nursing, Akure. Mr Danielson Akpan Bamidele, President of NANS, made the calls while speaking with newsmen in Akure.

8. The Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele says names of individuals and companies involved in smuggling and dumping textile materials into Nigeria will be published. He spoke in Katsina during the official flag-off of the distribution of seeds and other inputs to 100,000 cotton farmers in Nigeria for the 2019 planting season under its Anchor Borrower programme.

9. The Nigerian Army says it legally acquired its landed property in parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) currently generating controversy and advised indigenes protesting alleged land grab to channel their complaints to the appropriate quarters. The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai stated this on Tuesday in reaction to protest by some indigenes, who barricaded the Airport road, alleging the army grabbed their land. The Vice President addressed the protesters on his way to the airport on Tuesday.

10. The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has said President Muhammadu Buhari’s alleged confession that anger, frustration and disenchantment among the youths were responsible for the escalation of kidnapping, abduction and other crimes in the country, was a direct admission of his failure in governance. PDP said this explanation confirms that President Buhari was aware that Nigerian youths did not vote for him in the February 23 Presidential election. This was contained in a statement by its spokesperson, Kola Ologbondiyan.
