Good morning! Here are 10 things you need to know this morning:
1. Senator Bukola Saraki yesterday emerged Senate President after Senator Ahmed Sani Yerima moved for his nomination. There was no one present to nominate Senator Ahmed Lawan, hence Saraki was declared winner unopposed.
2. Relatively, Senator Ike Ekweremadu was returned as Deputy Senate President after he defeated Senator Ali Ndume, making it the first time that an opposition party will be part of the Senate leadership.
3. Report says some APC Senators were disappointed yesterday after they waited for President Muhammadu Buhari at the International Conference Centre in vain which eventually resulted to the defeat of their candidate contesting for the Senate Presidency. Report says the President has not given any reason why he failed to attend the meeting.
4. Hon. Yakubu Dogara from Bauchi state yesterday emerged Speaker, House of Representatives. He defeated his fellow contender, Femi Gbajamiabila after polling 182 votes as against the 174 votes polled by Gbajamiabila.
5. The All Progressives Congress has said the election of Saraki and Dogara as Senate President and Reps Speaker respectively was unacceptable even as it described their emergence as the highest level of indiscipline and treachery. This was contained in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed. The party said the duo of Saraki and Dogara were not the candidates chosen for the positions.
6. Similarly, the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has called on leadership of the party to ensure disciplinary action is instituted against Senate President, Bukola Saraki, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, for anti-party activities. This is contained in a statement issued by the chapter in reaction to their emergence yesterday.
7. President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday evening accepted the outcome of the National Assembly election. Even though he regretted that the party’s earlier decision was not followed, the President acknowledged that the constitutional procedures were followed during the election.
8. Report says an attack on a village in Borno State on Tuesday left at least 15 people dead. According to the report, the attack was allegedly staged by the Boko Haram insurgents at Huyum in the Askira-Uba district.
9. The case involving 10 bank officials indicted over N8 billion CBN currency scam has been adjourned by the Federal High Court in Ibadan till June 15.
10. Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has congratulated both Saraki and Dogara on their victory at the Tuesday National Assembly election, advising them to see their elections beyond the narrow interests of respective political parties.
