Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Wednesday morning

Good morning! Here are 10 things you need to know this morning:

1. The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Tuesday, said that fresh elections in the 91 polling units that witnessed cancellation of the ballots in the inconclusive Kogi election would hold on December 5. According to INEC, the date is to also enable APC fill the vacancy created as a result of the death of its candidate in the election, Prince Abubakar Audu.

2. Traders from the South East have disassociated themselves from the ongoing protest by some pro-biafran groups, saying they have nothing to do with the groups protesting and asking for secession. The traders spoke under the umbrella of ‘South East Markets Amalgamated Traders Association in Awka.

3. The Senate yesterday, asked its Committee on Appropriation to work on the N465bn supplementary appropriation bill and submit report for deliberation and passage next week Tuesday so as to address some national issues.

4. President Muhammadu Buhari will decide MTN’s fate regarding the fine imposed on it by the NCC. This was according to the Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, while dropping comment on the fine on Tuesday.

5. The U.S. State Department on Tuesday in Washington issued a global travel warning due to increase terrorist threats around the world. It linked the travel alert, which will be effective until Feb. 24, to information suggesting that militants with ISIS, al-Qaeda, Boko Haram and other militant groups were planning further attacks on different countries around the world.

6. The Defence Minister, Mohammed Dan’Ali, has assured Nigerians that the activities of the Boko Haram insurgents will soon be a thing of the past. He declared that the military had the viable tools in tackling the security situation in the country. He was optimistic that areas currently occupied by the insurgents will soon be liberated.

7. A group that identified itself as ” Prince Abubakar Audu’s Political Family,” has alleged that the late All Progressives Congress governorship candidate was killed by anti democratic forces in order to frustrate the development of the state and keep the people under their grip. A statement issued by the group and signed by Dr Tom Ohikere in Lokoja on Tuesday, said the same elements that killed the touch-bearer of Ebira land, Senator A T Ahmed were responsible for Audu’s death.

8. The U-23 National team, Dream Team VI will leave Banjul Gambia, on Wednesday, for Senegal for the Under-23 Africa Cup of Nations tournament holding in the country. The team will play Mali on Nov. 29 at the Caroline Faye Stadium, in Mbour.

9. The General Overseer of The Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has said it was certain that the matriarch of the Awolowo family, Chief (Mrs) Hannah Idowu Dideolu Awolowo is in the Lord’s bosom in heaven. He made this statement while holding a private prayer session with the family inside their Ikenne country home.

10. The Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier-General, Johnson Olawumi, has insisted that female Muslim corps members will not be allowed to wear hijab in camp as such development will affect the security of corps members. He made the statement in reaction to a protest staged by a group of Muslim youths in Abuja, where they demanded that hijab be allowed on camp.
