Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Wednesday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers

1. Ahmad Lawan and Femi Ggbajabiamila were on Tuesday elected as Senate President and House of Representatives Speaker of the 9th National Assembly.

While Ovie Omo-Agege was elected as the Deputy Senate President, Ahmed Wase emerged Deputy Speaker.

2. President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated Ahmed Lawan and Femi Gbajabiamila, both anointed candidates of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) who emerged as Senate President and House of Representatives Speaker, respectively.

The President saluted all the national legislators and their political parties for their display of patriotism and non-partisanship before and during the election.

3. Former Governor of old Kaduna State, Alh. Balarebe Abdulkadir Musa, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to unearth what led to the annulment of June 12, 1993 election and declare such action a treasonable offence.

He said the President must go a step further beyond declaring June 12 as a Democracy Day, but to know why the election was annulled with a view to punish those involved.

4. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued Certificate of Return to ex-Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha.

The board obeyed the directive after its management meeting on Tuesday and ordered that the certificate should be given to Okorocha.

5. Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has said the Federal Government’s decision to celebrate Democracy Day on June 12 was President Muhammadu Buhari administration’s commitment to progressive ideals.

Explaining that the Buhari administration believes in resolving some of the issues around the annulled June 12 1993 presidential election, the Vice President added that “One of the principal issues, politically, was the recognition of that election in 1993 which was won by, now late, Chief MKO Abiola, an important progressive opposition leader.

6. Yakubu Dogara, immediate past Speaker of the House of Representatives, has congratulated Sen. Ahmad Lawan and Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila on their election as Senate President and Speaker of the Senate and House of Representatives, respectively.

In a statement issued by his spokesman, Turaki Hassan on Tuesday, Dogara described the emergence of the new leaders of the National Assembly as the reflection of the wishes of the majority of Senators and Honourable Members.

7. Deputy President of the Senate, Sen. Ovie Omo-Agege has described the inauguration of the 9th Senate as a new chapter.

He told newsmen that he was aware of what transpired in the past but what happened on Tuesday has turned the page on 8th Senate and they have moved on to the 9th Senate.

8. Senator Ali Ndume representing Borno South senatorial district, who contested for the office of the 9th Senate President without success, has pledged to work with the newly-elected Senate President, Ahmed Ibrahim Lawan.

Speaking immediately after the election which he lost on Tuesday, he described Lawan as a well experienced lawmaker who was four years ahead of him, adding that he happily contested the election which he believes was in tandem with democracy.

9. Former Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has congratulated the newly elected presiding officers of the 9th Senate, Senator Ahmed Lawan and Senator Ovie Omo-Agege on their elections.

Ekweremadu, who took to his social media handles after the inauguration of the Ninth Senate, congratulated the President of the Senate, Senator Ahmed Lawan and his successor, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege on their elections.

10. The Special Presidential Investigation Panel, SPIP, for recovery of public property has transferred the case of alleged failure to declare assets brought against Senator Peter Nwaoboshi (Delta North) by the panel, to the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, DPPF, the prosecution.

The SPIP in a letter accompanying the case file, dated June 7, 2019, pointed out that it forwarded the case to the DPPF for further handling in furtherance of the inter-agency and collaborative efforts of Federal Government’s agencies involved in the anti-corruption war.
