Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Wednesday morning

1. President Muhammadu Buhari has reacted to the joint report of the International Republic Institute (IRI) and the National Democratic Institute (NDI) on the 2019 general elections in Nigeria and recommendations for the 2023 general elections.

A statement by his spokesman, Garba Shehu, said it was instructive that President Buhari clearly won the votes and the report in no way disputed that fundamental fact.

2. The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office on Tuesday gave a warning to its citizens on travel to some Nigerian states.

A statement on the UK government website said all travel to Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River States and 20km of the border with Niger in Zamfara State should be cancelled.

3. President Muhammadu Buhari, on Tuesday in Abuja signed into law the Federal Polytechnics Amendment bill and the National Institute for Security Studies bill.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (House of Representatives), Alhaji Umar El-Yakub, who disclosed this when he addressed State House Correspondents on Tuesday, said the new Act on Federal Polytechnics now pegs the tenure of Rectors of Federal Polytechnics at single five-year tenure.

4. The Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, says the Federal Government is discussing with stakeholders on ways to restructure Nigeria’s power sector with a view to improving supply and attracting more investment to the country.

He expressed the Federal Government’s commitment to creating “a willing buyer, willing seller” situation in the power sector market.

5. A Federal High Court sitting in Kano State has restrained Governor Umar Ganduje from implementing reports of the anti-corruption commission which indicted Emir Sanusi.

Also restrained are the State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission and the State Attorney General Barrister Ibrahim Mukthar from acting on the Preliminary Report of Investigation In Respect of Petition of Financial Misappropriation against Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II.

6. The Nigerian Air Force (NAN) says its Air Component of Operation HADARIN DAJI, has degraded a camp and neutralised scores of bandits in air strikes conducted at a location near Dangote Village in Zamfara.

Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, who disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, said the operation was conducted on Sunday.

7. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Tuesday, re-arraigned a former Minister of State for Power, Muhammad Wakil and four others before Justice J.K. Dagad of the Federal High Court, Maiduguri, Borno State on a seven-count charge bordering on criminal conspiracy and money laundering to the tune of N450million.

Wakil, who is standing trial alongside Garba Abacha, Ibrahim Shehu Birma, Dr. Abubakar Ali Kullima and Engr. Muhammad Baba Kachalla were alleged to have received the said sum from the $115million disbursed by a former minister of petroleum resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke to influence the outcome of the 2015 presidential election.

8. Archbishop of Kaduna Catholic Diocese, Most Rev. Mathew Manoso Ndagoso has said that the current administration has shown that it cannot lead Nigerians out of hunger and insecurity.

The cleric said since his ordination into priesthood 33 years ago, he had yet to know any regime as bad as the President Buhari led All Progressives Congress, APC, government.

9. Some unknown gunmen on Tuesday evening abducted Dayo Adewole, the son of the immediate past Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole.

Reports said Dayo Adewole was waylaid at gunpoint on his farm in Iroko, near Fiditi in Afijio Local Government Area of Oyo State at about 6 pm.

10. Gunmen, on Monday, killed a personnel of the military Special Task Force (STF), maintaining peace on the Plateau, and three other persons at Tubun-Rong village in Ganawuri District of Riyom Local Government Area of the state.

Mr Timothy Datong, member representing Riyom Constituency in the Plateau State House of Assembly, who disclosed this at Tuesday’s plenary, described the persistent killings in his constituency as “scary”.
