1. President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday appointed Dr. Thomas M. A. John as Acting Chairman of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC. This was disclosed in a press statement by the NNPC on Tuesday. Dr. John, a former Group Managing Director of the NNPC, before the appointment was a member of the NNPC Governing Board.
2. The pan Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to recruit more policemen from the 774 Local Government Areas in order to improve security. A delegation of the group led by Sen. Ayo Fasanmi, visited Buhari on Tuesday at the Presidential Villa.
3. The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Tuesday accused the Federal government and Police of docility in the manner the alleged illegal invasion and violent attack on the Abuja residence of the Taraba State Governor, Darius Ishaku was being handled. It also alleged that the poor handling of the matter was now sparking off suspicions of a creepy ploy to suppress facts and divert public attention from the questions surrounding the unlawful assault. PDP Spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, made these allegations while briefing newsmen in Abuja on Tuesday.
4. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has explained why there was a delay in paying the Super Eagles players their bonuses. Ademola Olajire, the NFF’s spokesman, claimed it was because the federation received part of the money meant for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations late. However, they are in the process of converting it to dollars and the players would be paid very soon.
5. The Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi 11, on Tuesday declared that Nigeria is on the threshold of bankruptcy following unfavourable economic policies. The former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) said this during the ongoing 3rd National Treasury Workshop organized by the office of the Accountant General of the Federation holding in Kano. Sanusi advised President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to cancel subsidy in petroleum and electricity tariffs if the economy must stabilize.
6. The President of the Senate, Dr. Ahmad Lawan has said that there was nothing like jumbo salary for National Assembly members as being speculated in some quarters. Lawan made the disclosure when members of the Senators’ Forum paid him a courtesy visit in his office in Abuja on Tuesday. While further dismissing the jumbo pay issue, he revealed that his monthly salary as a lawmaker and that of his colleagues was N750,000.
7. President Muhammadu Buhari has vowed to put an end to the persistent crisis between farmers and herdsmen across the country. He disclosed that his administration was putting together policies that would put a permanent end to the crisis. Buhari spoke while receiving delegates from Nassarawa State at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Tuesday.
8. Presidential candidates from 60 political parties under the aegis of Joint Forum of Presidential candidates, on Tuesday, faulted the claim by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, that an electronic server was used by INEC during the 2019 presidential election. They disclosed that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, informed political parties involved in the 2019 elections that it will not transmit results electronically because there was no legal instrument backing such.
9. The Rivers State Police Command on Tuesday said it has rescued three Lebanese who were abducted at a construction site in Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers on June 8. The command’s spokesman, DSP Nnamdi Omoni, confirmed the rescue in a statement in Port Harcourt on Tuesday.
10. Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has kicked against the plan by the Federal Government to establish ‘Ruga settlements’ for Fulani herdsmen in the state. Ortom reiterated that Benue State has no land for grazing reserves, grazing routes, cattle colonies or ruga settlements. He said that the State only has land for the establishment of ranches.
