1. Report says a former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, on Monday returned N30m to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, bringing the total amount of money he has returned so far to N134m. The report further revealed that he promised to return the remaining N450m in 2017, as the total amount he is to return to EFCC is N584m.
2. The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, PFN, has dragged Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai and two others before Justice Hajara Gwadah of Kaduna State High Court , asking the court to declare as null and void a controversial executive bill before Kaduna State House of Assembly, which seeks to strengthen a moribund 1984 Kaduna State law that regulates preaching in the state. The other two joined in the case are Kaduna State House of Assembly and the Attorney General of the state.
3. The House of Representatives has urged the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA), to reduce the current price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) to N70. This followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Rep. Abubakar Fulata titled, “Urgent Need to Review the Petroleum Price Template.”
4. The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, has said that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had no exclusive rights to any investigations as his office would always be in the know on all matters it is investigating. He also said his office received full briefing and gave backing to the arrest of some judges by the Department of State Services over allegations of corruption last month. Malami disclosed this in Abuja on Tuesday when he appeared before an ad hoc committee of the House of Representatives at the National Assembly.
5. The Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, Tuesday, disclosed that the Federal Government spent $1billion (about N310 billion) on kerosene subsidy in 2015. While lamenting the high demand for kerosene in the country, the VP blamed low usage of Liquefied Petroleum Gas, LPG, also known as cooking gas as the major reason for the rise in demand.
6. There may be light at the end of the tunnel following the assurance by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, that with the progress so far recorded through its agricultural financing policies, Nigeria will begin to export rice to other countries before the end of next year. This was disclosed on Tuesday by CBN’s Acting Director, Corporate Communication, Mr. Isaac Okoroafor, during a sensitisation/awareness programme for farmers in Bayelsa State on the apex bank’s Anchor Borrowers’ Programme, ABP.
7. A Lagos Federal High Court Tuesday, struck out Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia’s suit seeking her release from custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. The Justice Muslim Hassan-led court, on Tuesday struck out the suit, saying the suit had become academic in view of the bail granted Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia by a Lagos State High Court in Ikeja on Monday. 8. The Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has said that the leader of the other faction of the party, Senator Modu Sheriff, may go to jail for parading himself as the authentic chairman of the party despite losing to its faction at the tribunal. Spokesperson for the Makarfi group, Dayo Adeyeye, in a statement, on Tuesday, said court judgments obtained by the group had barred Sheriff from parading himself as the national chairman of the party, hence his action may take him to prison.
9. The Nigerian female team, Tuesday night defeated Bayana Bayana of South Africa in the semi-final of the African Women Nation’s Cup holding in Cameroon to proceed to the final of the competition. The only goal of the match came in the second half after a free kick awarded the Nigerians was scored by number 9, Oparanozie. Nigeria will now face the host – Cameroon in the final.
10. Police have arrested a suspected fraudster, Ekperebuike Akadonye, for allegedly parading himself as the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, on the Internet. The suspect, 29 who was apprehended by the Inspector-General Special Intelligence Response Team, has equally defrauded a Saudi Arabia-based doctor, identified as Hassan Alkahallaf, to the tune of $10,000.
