Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Wednesday morning

1. A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Tuesday granted bail to leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, but not without stringent bail conditions.

The presiding judge, Binta Nyako, gave the order to allow Mr. Kanu attend to his ailing health condition, but he should produce three sureties with N100m bailbond, including a respected Jewish leader, among other conditions.

2. The apex Igbo socio-political organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has condemned Nnamdi Kanu’s bail conditions, saying that it was too stringent for him to meet.

President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo, who described the conditions as ‘unfair’ and ‘unconstitutional’ prayed that the prison authorities release him because he has been granted bail in the past. Other Nigerians equally condemned the bail condition.

2. The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, has said that with the ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to revive the country’s economy, the country should be out of recession by the third quarter of this year.

Accordng to Emefiele, the apex bank would continue with its intervention in the foreign exchange market, adding that efforts by the apex bank so far had been yielding positive results.

3. Tunji, one of the children of the first civilian Governor of Osun State, Senator Isiaka Adeleke, who died recently, has alleged that his father was killed because of his perceived governorship ambition come 2018.

Tunji, who said this in a snapchat on Tuesday, said that some persons, who he did not name, eliminated his dad because they considered him a big threat to their ambition ahead of the next year election.

4. The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, has announced the ban on chloroquine and artemisinin monotherapy used in the treatment of malaria.

According to Adewole, about N300bn was being lost annually by the Federal Government in the treatment and prevention of the disease, noting that losses are incurred in government’s efforts to address the scourge in the country.

5. Former President Goodluck Jonathan has accused the ex-Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega of disappointing him during the 2015 general elections.

Jonathan said he was disappointed by Jega’s insistence on conducting the elections in February 2015. He said when Jega was insistent on conducting the elections in February 2015, about 40 per cent eligible Nigerians had not collected their Permanent Voter Cards.

6. The Benue State Police Command has arraigned eight suspects before a magistrate’s court for culpable homicide and criminal conspiracy.

They were said to have killed six commuters while protesting the alleged killings in Tse Igba Uke and Aliade villages in Gwer Local Government Area of Benue by suspected herdsmen.

7. The embattled suspended Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, was on Tuesday quizzed by the committee set up by President Muhammadu Buhari to investigate him and the suspended Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Ayo Oke.

Lawal appeared before the committee at a session that started at about 1pm. The committee chaired by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo meets inside one of the conference rooms in the Vice-President’s office.

8. The naira Tuesday depreciated to N374.96 per dollar in the newly introduced investors and exporter foreign exchange window.

The Financial Market Dealers Quote (FMDQ), the Nigeria Autonomous Foreign Exchange Rate Fixing (NAFEX), opened yesterday at N374.25 per dollar and closed at N374.96 per dollar.

9. At least, 253 Nigerians repatriated from Libya arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, on Tuesday. The returnees, who arrived aboard an airbus belonging to Libyan Air, touched down at the airport around 6.45pm and were assisted back into the country through the intervention of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).

10. A former governor of Niger State, Dr. Babangida Aliyu, and his former commissioner and Chief of staff, Umar Nasko, have been remanded in the prisons custody for alleged financial fraud.

A 95-count charge was earlier preferred against him before it was reduced to six by EFCC. The charge includes dishonestly converting to personal use money belonging to Niger State, amounting to about N5 billion.
