Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Wednesday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. The National Bureau of Statistics on Tuesday released the Gross Domestic Product report for the first quarter of this year, which showed that the economy contracted by just 0.52 per cent in the period, a sign that the country may be out of recession in the third quarter.

2. The man who bombed the Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, UK, where 22 persons died and 59 others got injured, has been named as Salman Ramadan Abedi, a Libyan descent. Police confirmed the 22-year-old’s identity was known after officials in the United States passed it to news reporters, apparently against the wishes of the police and security services in the UK. Police say attacker died after detonating the improvised explosive device.

3. The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the clash between Jukun and Tiv ethnic groups in Benue State. The crisis reportedly broke out when two young men of Tiv and Jukun ethnic groups clashed at Feedi Market on Monday. The matter was said to have resulted into a heavy fight, which allegedly led to the killing of one person simply identified as Tsegba Terver and two other persons. But the police says only one person was killed in the incident.

4. The Presidency, on Tuesday, said it was not time to assess the performance of President Muhammadu Buhari. It said the report card of the present administration could not be prepared when it has not even gone far into its four-year term. The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, said this at a press briefing to mark the second anniversary of the Buhari administration at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

5. Retired American boxer and President of The Money Gang (TMT), Floyd Mayweather, has confirmed his plans to be in Nigeria from June 12 to 14 this year. In a short video uploaded on YouTube, Mayweather revealed he was making the trip to “the motherland.”

6. Report says the Central Bank of Nigeria will be selling an undisclosed amount of dollars to settle a backlog of foreign exchange demand for airlines, fuel and raw material importers. According to foreign exchange traders, the CBN had asked commercial banks to submit bids for dollars to cover the previously unmet demand for hard currency for specific sectors to reduce the current pressure on the naira.

7. A report has emerged that at least 150 members of Chief Ralph Uwazuruike-led Biafra Independent Movement, BIM, were, yesterday, arrested by the police across different states in the South-East and South-South. It was revealed that 41 persons were arrested in Enugu alone and the rest from different parts of others states.

8. The Senate has urged the Central Bank of Nigeria to look at the possibility of converting the country’s lower currency notes into coins. The Senate made the call after a motion by Mustapha Bukar, the Senator representing Katsina South. He said the local retailers keep rejecting the coins because commercial banks won’t accept them as deposit, even when they are reflected on paper, yet the CBN still recognizes them as legal tender.

9. The Nigeria Customs Service, (NCS), Tuesday intercepted another 20 footer container laden with 440 guns of various sizes and designs. Disclosing this to newsmen in Lagos, Assistant Comptroller General of Customs, Monday Abueh said that the cargo was shipped from Turkey. He said the suspect has already been arrested.

10. A police inspector and two siblings were killed during a masquerade festival at Ilagbo community, in the Ibeju Lekki area of Lagos State. Report says some youths of Oriyanrin, a neighbouring community, had attended the masquerade event tagged, Kilajolu festival, at Ilagbo on Saturday when a clash broke out between the two communities leading to the killings.
