Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Wednesday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. The Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency has stated that it did not approve any N5 increase in pump price of Premium Motor Spirit, also known as petrol. The agency refuted media speculations of an imminent increase in the price of petrol by N5 per litre, saying it had not given any such approval to anybody or group.

2. Following apprehensions over the state of health of detained leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), Sheikh Ibrahim El- Zakzaky, Nigeria’s security agencies say the speculations were sponsored by those who want the Shiites leader out at all cost. A report quoted a security source as saying the rumour was the handiwork of mischief makers, who want to create tension and cause chaos within the polity.

3. The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), has said it recovered two food supply pick-up trucks from suspected Boko Haram members in Mainok council area of Borno. Ibrahim Abdullahi, state Commandant of the corps said the trucks were intercepted by men of the command on patrol following a tip-off.

4. Lawmaker from Kogi West Senatorial District, Senator Dino Melaye, has again been caught on tape, allegedly disclosing how he framed some people over the assassination attempt on his life at his country home. According to the audio, Melaye is reportedly heard, telling the son of late governor of the state, Prince Abubakar Audu, Mohammed Audu, that he deliberately used his connections with the police to frame someone referred to as “Edward” in the alleged attempt on his life.

5. Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has written to the Senate, requesting approval for one billion, four hundred and ninety-two million, four hundred thousand dollars ($1,492,400,000,00) external loan. Senate President, Bukola Saraki, while reading the letter at plenary, on Tuesday, said, the loan was part of the federal government’s external borrowing plan, meant for projects in ten states.

6. Northern groups, including the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, on Tuesday, gave all Igbos in the 19 states of the North a three-month ultimatum to leave or be forced out after the expiration of the deadline. The groups said the ultimatum was necessary as the North was now tired of the ingratitude of the Igbos.

7. Report says residents of Nwala-Jan Gahe community in Katsina State were thrown into confusion last Friday following the death of a teenage boy and destruction of about 300 houses by the windstorm that ravaged the community. Five persons were also reported to have sustained varying degrees of injury in the incident.

8. There was pandemonium in Iwo, an ancient town in Osun State, as hoodlums on Tuesday raided three new generation banks, leaving 4 people dead. Report says that the bandits stormed the banks at exactly 3:25pm, and raided the three banks along Bowen University, simultaneously. Three policemen were reportedly killed in the course of the robbery, while one of the robbers was killed by policemen attached to one of the banks.

9. Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode has said that there will be grave consequences, if Igbos were kicked out of the North. Reacting to the ultimatum by the Northern Coalition Groups, FFK said kicking the Igbos out of the North will not help matters in the country but rather complicate the fragile state of the nation as the the middle-belt and the South-South will this time around stand with them.

10. Youths under the El-Rufai Campaign Organization Group and Continuity Project 2019, Tuesday, in Kaduna stormed the State House of Assembly, protesting against the APC-led government’s failure to keep up with the promise of empowering them. The aggrieved protesters who gathered in front of Lugard Hall, blocked the major road leading in and out of the Assembly, causing traffic gridlock, threatening that there would be no APC in 2019.
