Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Wednesday morning

1. The Kogi State House of Assembly Complex was on Tuesday prevented from holding its plenary following a crisis that erupted over the alleged plan to remove the Majority Leader of the House, Matthew Kolawole. It was alleged that the State Commissioner of Police, Wilson Inalegwu who had earlier assured journalists that the plenary was going to be peaceful, could not act when the thugs stormed the assembly, raising suspicion that he was allegedly working on the order of the governor.

2. Two policemen attached to singer, Davido have been reportedly arrested by the Lagos police command. Their arrest was ordered after a video of the officers firing sporadic shots in the air appeared online. The video showed the officers firing shots as Davido was driven from Murtala Mohammed Airport to Lekki.

3. The Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has said that contrary to insinuations, the Senate had no premeditated plan to reject Ibrahim Magu as chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Saraki while speaking to journalists in Abuja on Tuesday insisted that the screening of Magu, which led to his rejection, was transparently done.

4. The immediate past minister of Interior, Comrade Abba Moro has said that the Governor has sold out the future of the state. According to Moro, anyone campaigning for the governor to still remain in power beyond 2019 does not want the good of the state. Moro said this on Tuesday while addressing the expanded caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party at the secretariat of the party in Makurdi, the Benue State capital.

5. Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo has redeployed the chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Ekpo Nta, to the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission. This was confirmed in a statement issued late Tuesday in Abuja and signed by the Director Press, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Bolaji Adebiyi. Nta has been replaced at ICPC by Prof. Bolaji Owasanoye.

6. Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo on Tuesday said three lecturers of the University of Maiduguri, 15 policewomen, 113 Chibok girls and other Nigerians in Boko Haram’s captivity would be freed soon as the Presidency is working with negotiators who had in the past assisted in securing the release of former hostages.

7. Former President, Goodluck Jonathan has listed items stolen from one of his houses located at Gwarimpa, Abuja. A statement released on Tuesday by his media aide, Ikechukwu Eze stated that the house was totally stripped bare by the thieves, who stole every movable item including furniture sets, beds, electronics, toilet and electrical fittings, as well as all internal doors and frames.

8. The remains of the mother of Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, has been laid to rest at her residence in Ilesa, Osun State according to Islamic rites. Alhaja Saratu Aregbesola died in the early hours of Tuesday. The Deputy Governor, Titilayo Tomori-Laoye, other executives, Lawmakers and political associates from across Osun State were all at the home of the late Madam Aregbesola to pay their last respect.

9. The leader of the Biafra Independent Movement (BIM), Ralph Uwazuruike, has disclosed plans to launch a new pro-Biafra radio station known as Voice of Biafra International. According to a press release signed by BIM’s Director of Information, Mazi Chris Mocha, Uwazuruike noted that despite threat by IPOB that election will not hold in Anambra, he will mobilize support for Obiano to ensure that the election holds and peaceful as well.

10. The Director General, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, has ‘attacked’ the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, over the governor’s recent revocation of the Certificate of Occupancy of Port Harcourt-based Novotel Hotel. Peterside described Wike’s action as worse traits of fascism, saying he had earlier told Rivers people and the international community that Wike cannot be trusted to protect their investments and interests.
