Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Wednesday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. There was tension in Enugu State on Tuesday following report of a blast within Enugu, the State capital. Report says the explosion occurred Monday night at the New Artisan Market, Enugu. The development created tension in the State yesterday as residents were seen in group discussing the incident. Enugu State Police command through its spokesman, SP Ebere Amaraizu said the police have commenced full scale investigations into the blast.

2. The Nigerian Army, on Tuesday allegedly held Nnamdi Kanu hostage in his Umuahia residence. IPOB spokesman, Emma Powerful who confirmed the development said the soldiers took over Kanu’s house as from 5.30am on Tuesday. He said despite the unprovocative attack, the group had remained peaceful.

3. Following the ongoing tension in Abia State over military operations in the State, the Abia the State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu has imposed a three-day curfew in the commercial city of Aba. The state government said the curfew starts from 6pm to 6am on Tuesday and ends on Thursday.

4. Some youths in Imo State have set ablaze the palace of the traditional ruler of Obollo autonomous community, Edwin Mbaeyi, in Isiala Mbano Local Government of the state. This follows the alleged refusal of the monarch to coronate one Chijioke Njokuocha as the traditional prime minister of the community after the death of his father, Samuel Njokuocha. Report says the monarch’s preference for one Jasper Nwachukwu angered the youths who had gathered to witness the coronation of Chief Njokuocha.

5. Oludare Buraimoh, a Director in Lagos State Ministry of Youths, has committed suicide by hanging himself in his room. Buraimoh, who lives at Unity Estate, Phase II, Gbonagun, Abeokuta, Ogun State, took his life at about 4pm on Monday after attending to his son Dotun, who was sick.

6. Reports say suspected IPOB members and the Northern community in Oyigbo area of Port Harcourt were on Tuesday involved in a clash before security men were mobilized to the area to calm the situation. The report claimed that a Mosque and some other property were burnt down.

7. The Osun State chapter of the Correspondent Chapel of the Nigerian Union of Journalists has said it has rejected the monetary compensation offered to the correspondent of The Point, Mr. Timothy Agbor, whose mobile phone was destroyed after he was assaulted by some operatives of the Department of State Services. The Secretary of the chapel, Mr. Olaniyi Ajibola, said on Tuesday that the DSS sent N40,000 to Agbor, but the chapel had rejected the offer.

8. Founder of Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), Fredrick Fasheun has blamed the ongoing clamour for the disintegration of the country on the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government. He said the reason might not be unconnected with the way Buhari is showing preference for the northern part of the country over other regions. He said if the president failed to retrace his steps, his action may lead to the nation’s breakup.

9. The Independent National Electoral Commission has resumed the recall process for the senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Dino Melaye. INEC National Commissioner and member of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mallam Mohammed Haruna, said in a statement on Tuesday that the commission would release a revised timetable and schedule of activities on September 18, 2017 in compliance with the orders of the court.

10. The Nigerian Army says ‘Operation Python Dance 2’, exercise in the South-East, was not targeted at the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu. Deputy Director, Public Relations, 82 Division of the Army in Enugu, Sagir Musa, said the exercise is not targeted at any individual or group but meant to prevent security challenges identified in the south-east and parts of Cross River, denying also that army had laid siege on Kanu’s residence.
