1. Glowing tributes have continued to pour in for Alex Ekwueme, Nigeria’s first Vice President, who passed away in a London hospital during the weekend. President Muhammadu Buhari, this Vice, Yemi Osinbajo, Senate President, Bukola Saraki and some governors as well as many other Nigerians in separate statements described the late elder statesman as a quintessential leader, who would be greatly missed.
2. Zimbabwe’s parliament has announced that Robert Mugabe may be removed from office within the next two days. Paul Mangwana, Zanu-PF’s deputy secretary for legal affairs, on Monday told reporters at the party’s Harare headquarters that impeachment was being planned as early as Tuesday.
3. The Nigerian Army Council on Monday approved the promotion of 45 Brigadier Generals to the rank of Major Generals and 92 Colonels to the rank of Brigadier Generals. Some of those promoted to the rank of Two Star Generals (Major General) include Brigadier General HO Otiki, Acting Commander Defence Headquarters Garrison; Brigadier General OO Soleye, Acting Director Veteran Affairs, Defence Headquarters; Acting Provost Marshal, Brigadier General AT Hamman; Acting Military Secretary, Brigadier General F Yahaya.
4. Oseloka Obaze, candidate of the PDP, has at last conceded defeat to Governor Willie Obiano in the last Saturday’s governorship election in Anambra State. Obaze, who congratulated Obano on his victory, also hailed other candidates who participated in the poll.
5. The Senator representing Abia South, Eyinnaya Abaribe, has accused the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, of frustrating his role as a surety in the bail granted the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, by a Federal High Court in Abuja. Abaribe said this in a fresh motion he filed before the court where he and Kanu’s two other sureties had been ordered to explain the IPOB leader’s whereabouts.
6. Nigerian dancehall singer and songwriter, Damini Ogulu aka Burna Boy has been declared wanted by the police in connection with the alleged robbery attack on fellow artiste, Mr 2kay, at Eko Hotel. During interrogation, the robbers confessed that they were hired by Burna Boy through his manager, Joel Kantiock, who was arrested in Zaria, Kaduna State.
7. President Muhammadu Buhari has disclosed that Nigerians deserve to know why the country lost its former national carrier, Nigeria Airways.The president also stated that he was under tremendous pressure from some prominent Nigerians who are desirous of the establishmentof another national carrier for the country.
8. Police operatives have arrested one Maryam Sanda for allegedly stabbing Bilyamin Muhammed Bello to death. DSP Anjuguri Manzah, Police Public Relations Officer, said the female suspect was already in custody, she was arrested on Sunday.
9. Nigeria has been ranked 35 out of 54 in Africa after it scored 48.1 out of 100.0 in overall governance. The ranking was titled ‘The Ibrahim Index of African Governance (IIAG),’ and provides an annual assessment of the quality of governance in African countries. According to the 2017 IIAG report which was released on Monday in Senegal, Nigeria scored lower than the African average (50.8) and lower than the regional average for West Africa (53.8).
10. Gunmen shot another community chief leader dead in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State Sunday night.The latest incident involves the Madakin Garam, Tarangol village, Amos Marit.
