Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Tuesday morning

1. President Muhammadu Buhari and his USA counterpart, Donald Trump, yesterday met in the White House, Washington DC.

Trump pointedly told President Buhari to end the killing of Christians in Nigeria, saying that the menace would no longer be tolerated.

2. A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Dr Joseph Nwobidike, has been sentenced to 30 days behind bars for perverting the course of justice.

Justice Raliatu Adebiyi of Ikeja High Court who gave the sentence, said Nwobike was found guilty of 12 counts of the 18-count charge slammed on him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

3. The Abuja chapter of the Federal High Court on Monday ordered an interim forfeiture of two properties linked to Patience Jonathan, wife of former President, Goodluck Jonathan.

The properties located at Plot No. 1960, Cadastral Zone A05, Maitama District; and Plot No. 1350, Cadastral Zone A00, both in Abuja were said to be registered in the name of Ariwabai Aruera Reachout Foundation, which Patience is one of the trustees.

4. Fresh attack on residents in Onocha-Olona in Aniocha-North Local Government Area of Delta State by rampaging Fulani herdsmen has claimed the lives of two persons in the area, and left six others severely injured in Ubulu-Uku community Aniocha South Local Government Area of the state.

Reports said among the victims were, Emmanuel Nwanyi, Joseph Obada and Julius Nwandike, who were attacked in their farm lands in Olona community by the herdsmen after a minor disagreement over the destruction of the farm crops allegedly by their cattle.

5. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that newly-registered voters, will receive their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) early in May.

INEC National Commissioner in charge of Ondo, Ogun and Lagos States, Adekunle Ogunmola said the commission was determined to register all eligible voters before the 2019 general elections, to enable them perform their civic responsibility.

6. The Methodist Church Nigeria, has once again called on President Muhammadu Buhari to declare armed herdsmen responsible for the killings across the Middle Belt, terrorists.

Reading a 17-point communiqué signed by the Prelate, His Eminence Samuel Kanu Uche and Secretary to Conference, Rt. Rev, Michael Akinwale, respectively, at the end of its 36th Council of Methodist Bishops at the Hoarse Memorial Methodist Church in Yaba, Lagos, the Church Prelate, said the call became necessary because of the herdsmen’s ideologies that established it as Boko Haram, which was declared a terrorist organization in 2013.

7. The Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu has said that he prefers the leadership quality of President Muhammadu Buhari to that of former President, Olusegun Obasanjo.

He pleaded with Nigerians to give Buhari another four years as the country’s leader, adding that a second chance would enable the President to improve on the country’s economy.

8. The Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN) has faulted statement credited to United States President Donald Trump on the killings of Christians in Nigeria.

The Amir (President) of the MSSN in Lagos State, Dr Saheed Ashafa in a press statement said Trump’s statement would cause further division in Nigeria.

9. Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has revealed that only five of the 23 Local Government Areas of the state are free from attacks by herdsmen.

According to him, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) would soon visit the state to address some of the challenges and assured that “very soon they would become a thing of the past”.

10. The Federal Government says it is monitoring inflow of funds into the country to prevent terrorism funding.

The Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, who disclosed this at an International Conference against the financing of terrorism in Paris, France, said the Government is also monitoring ‘non-formal cash-based structures’, which can often be used “for illicit purposes.”
