1. Head coach of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr, on Monday unveiled a 30-man provisional squad for the 2018 World Cup. The team which will be led by John Obi Mikel has four goalkeepers-Ikechukwu Ezenwa, Daniel Akpeyi, Francis Uzoho and Dele Ajiboye. It also has Victor Moses, Alex Iwobi, Moses Simon, Kelechi Iheanacho and a host of others.
2. Some suspected Fulani herdsmen had in the early hours of Monday attacked two communities in Kogi west, killing ten people. Report says the herdsmen numbering about 50 invaded two Tiv settlements with guns; one in Ilai outskirt of Mopamuro and the other in Ido-Gbede of Ijumu local government councils at about 4am on Monday.
3. Operatives of the Imo State Police Command Monday took over the secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) located at Imo State University Junction in Owerri. The national leadership of the party had announced the postponement of the Imo State Local Government congresses which took place across other parts of the country. According to the police, the recent development of a fire outbreak at the secretariat was the reason for the takeover.
4. The Sultan of Sokoto and President General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, has directed Muslims across the country to look for the new moon of Ramadan on Wednesday. The Deputy Secretary-General of the NSCIA, Prof. Salisu Shehu, disclosed this in a statement.
5. President Muhammadu Buhari has disclosed that the $320m recovered loot of former late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha would be spent on the Conditional Cash Transfer scheme of the administration to support the poor. The President, who was represented by his deputy, Yemi Osinbajo made the disclosure while declaring open the Eighth Commonwealth Conference of Anti-Corruption Agencies in Africa, in Abuja.
6. Senate leadership Monday night resolved to comply with the judgement of the Federal High Court and do nothing to stop Senator Ovie Omo-Agege from resuming from his suspension tomorrow being Tuesday May 15. Senate spokesman, Sabi Aliyu Abdullahi in a statement he signed and released to newsmen said that as a law abiding institution, the senate would allow Omo-Agege to resume pending the determination of the application for stay of execution.
7. A former Governor of Plateau State and Senator representing Plateau North, Jonah David Jang has accused Minister for Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, for masterminding his unlawful detention by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Jang in a press statement signed by his Media Consultant, Clinton Garuba, said he was detained by the anti-graft agency after he wrote a letter to the Minister seeking the retraction of his name from looters’ list.
8. Report says armed bandits operating along Birnin-Gwari-Kaduna Highways, on Sunday kidnapped 87 passengers. According to the report, most of the kidnapped victims were passengers travelling between North and Southern parts of the country. It claimed that over 15 vehicles including long trucks, buses and commercial cars were intercepted by the armed bandits who selected their victims and took them into the bush.
9. Nathaniel Sharibu, father of abducted Dapchi schoolgirl, Leah Sharibu, has called on the media to mount pressure on the Federal Government to ensure the release of his daughter. Sharibu, while marking his daughter’s birthday, who turns 15 on Tuesday, May 15, lamented the daughter’s continuous detention in the hands of Boko Haram.
10. Catholic Knights of the Order of St. Mulumba have decried the inability of the federal government to stop the gory killings and wanton destruction of property and livelihoods by armed herdsmen, urging it to bring to book all those behind the acts of brigandage and savagery. The Supreme Knight of the Order, Sir Diamond Ovueraye, in a statement, yesterday, in Abuja lamented that if the federal government does not move swiftly to end the killings, it could degenerate into a serious crisis capable of tearing the country apart.
