Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

2. The Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has reacted to the report of the impeachment notice served on him by eight members of the State House of Assembly on Monday. According to the governor, it’s impossible for just 8 members of the State Assembly to issue him an impeachment notice. He argued that the same Speaker who led the other members to the assembly with the support of the police remain suspended even as there is an existing court order stopping him from coming to the Assembly.

3. The Benue State House of Assembly, Monday suspended for 6 months the 7 members who held an illegal sitting under the leadership of the impeached and suspended Speaker with the help of the police. The suspended members are: Terkimbi ikyange -(Impeached speaker), Adanyi Benjamin, Terhemba Chabo, Benjamin Nungwa, Bem Mngutyo, Adams Okloho, James Okefe, Nick Eworo. The house took the decision in the presence of 18 members with 4 notices of absence.

4. The Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki and Speaker, House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, have described as “a desecration of the legislative sanctity”, the on-going situation in Benue State in which eight out of the 30 members of the State House of Assembly, Monday commenced impeachment process against the Governor with the support of the police. This was contained in a joint statement signed by their media aides.

5. Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Yakubu Dogara, has said that the House was concerned about the seeming injustice to the Nigerian public through continuous increment of electricity tariff after the federal government bailed the energy sector with a whopping sum of N123 billion. Dogara was speaking on Monday at a public hearing organised by the House Ad-Hoc Committee to interface with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and other stakeholders.

6. The Kano State deputy governor, Hafiz Abubakar, has petitioned the police and the Department State of Services, DSS, over threat to his life and plans to impeach him. Abubakar, a loyalist of former Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, had been at loggerheads with the state governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, for his alleged support for Kwankwaso. In a petition addressed to Kano State police commissioner and copied to the Assistant Inspector General in charge of Zone I, and the state director of the DSS, Mr. Hafiz Abubakar sought the deployment of security personnel around him.

Saraki was reacting to the claim by Adamu that the Senate President once referred to Senator Dino Melaye as “clown” in a private chat with him. Saraki stated that the Senator from Nasarawa State has been peddling insults and lies about him but he has ignored him out of respect for his age.

9. The Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Abdullahi Atta, was on Monday impeached. 27 out of the 44 lawmakers endorsed his impeachment. A new Speaker, Alhassan Rurum was immediately sworn in.
